Yelling. Weeping. The sounds of guns. That was all Anne heard as the troops stormed into the neighborhood. She was huddled in the basement, trying to be as quiet as possible. Anne and her family and friends were all crammed into the basement of her father’s work building as the troops drew nearer and nearer… This is the story of Anne Frank’s childhood, life, death, as well as her legacy that still lives on to this day.

Anne Frank had a brutal childhood filled with the hate of Jews that would later lead to WWII (World War 2). Annelies Marie Frank was born June 12, 1929, to Edith and Otto Frank in Frankfurt, Germany. In addition, she had a sister named Margot who was three years older than her. When Anne turned four and a half, her family moved to Amsterdam in the Netherlands because Adolf Hitler and his Nazi Party had gained control over Germany. Afterward, Anne’s father, Otto, started a pectin business (pectin is used to make jelly). Anne learned Dutch and was educated at the 6th Montessori School in Amsterdam (Anne Frank Stichting). Anne’s childhood living was complicated because of the increasing hate for Jews, having to move to Amsterdam, and starting school.

Anne Frank’s life was very short, as she only lived until age sixteen. She spent most of her life in Amsterdam until the Nazis invaded the Netherlands. Anne was only ten when the Nazis invaded. More and more places came under Nazi rule and were therefore off limits to Anne as well as the other Jews in the area. The Nazis didn’t let the Jews run their own businesses any longer, and Jewish children could only go to schools for Jews. The Nazis didn’t stop there. Further, they made all Jews wear a Star of David on their shirt so they knew who was Jewish. Some Jews were even spreading rumors that all of the Jews would have to flee from the Netherlands to escape German rule (Holocaust Encyclopedia). Soon after, Anne’s sister Margot received a call to report to a so-called “labor camp” in Germany. Anne’s parents got suspicious and decided to go into hiding to escape more persecution. Anne’s father, Otto, prepared the basement of his work building in the spring of 1942 so that his family could hide there. Soon after it was ready, four more people joined the Frank family in hiding. It was very cramped and Anne was often afraid, though she knew she had to keep quiet (Anne Frank Stichting). Then, Anne got her diary, which today is world- famous, on her thirteenth birthday. She kept a record of everything that was happening in the Secret Annex (the basement of Otto’s work building) and also put her thoughts and emotions on paper in this way. Soon after Anne had started rewriting her diary, their hiding place in the Secret Annex was discovered on August fourth, 1944. Anne and the others in hiding with her were transported to extermination camps after they had been discovered by the Nazis. They traveled by train, which took them three days. The trains had little food and water and only a barrel for a toilet. There were many people packed in the trains and it was very cramped. When they got there, many people were taken to gas chambers and immediately killed, while others were taken to the concentration camps. Otto went to the men’s extermination camps, while Edith, Anne, and Margot went to the women’s camps. Anne was then transported again to another concentration camp, Bergen-Belsen, with Margot while their parents were forced to stay behind in their own concentration camps. The conditions in Bergen-Belsen were just as horrible, if not worse. There was a lack of food, it was wet and cold, and there were many very contagious illnesses. Anne and Margot died of typhus due to these conditions, Margot in late February of 1945, at age nineteen, Anne only days later in the beginning of March at age fifteen or sixteen. They were buried in a mass grave (Holocaust Encyclopedia).Anne’s short and traumatic life involved many hardships and bravery as she went into hiding, was shortly after discovered and brought to the concentration camps, transported to yet another camp, and shortly after, died of typhus there.
