As a kid Siddhartha Gautama always thought something was missing in his life. He looked around at all the people morning over deaths and suffering. He always asked himself, why is the world in so much pain? In a result of this he questioned the meaning of life and he was determined to find answers. He was so determined he focused his mind on only spiritual things. Supposedly he spent six years wandering throughout India until he stopped in the town of Gaya. There he meditated for several weeks and finally found what he was looking for. He spent the rest of his life traveling to teach people about his ideas. He soon gained a lot of followers and after his death the idea of Buddhism spread rapidly through India.

As he traveled many people followed and understood his teachings. These followers were considered the first believers of Buddhism. They believed that people should act morally and treat others well. They also believe in the eight fold path. This path is the middle way between a humans desires and denying oneself any pleasure. They believe that people should overcome their desire for goods and other things. They should be reasonable and not starve their bodies or cause themselves unnecessary pain. Along with those teachings they also have four main noble truths. The first one is suffering and unhappiness are apart of the human life and there is no way to escape sorrow. The second one is suffering comes from our desires for pleasure and goods and that people cause their own misery because they want things they cannot have. The third one is people can overcome their desires and ignorance and reach Nirvana, a state of perfect peace. The last one is people can can use the eight fold path to lead them to wisdom, enlightenment and salvation.

Part of Buddha's teachings rejected many of Hinduism. For example information that was contained in the Vedas. The Buddha challenged authority of Hindu priests. He did not believe that they or their rituals were necessary for enlightenment. The Buddha did not reject the topic of reincarnation. He taught that if people didn't reach the nirvana would have to be reborn time and time again until they got it. Buddha did not agree with the caste system. He thought that people shouldn't be split up into different groups and that it didn't matter as long as they lived the life they should. Many people who were in a low caste liked hearing that their caste wont get in the way of their enlightenment. Also they felt as if they could change their lives.
