Abstract

In the article, "You’re Not Going to Get Accepted into a Top University on Merit Alone," the author talks about how merit is overrated and how elite colleges actually accept students. Even if you are the best high school student, you may still not get into one of the Ives because hundreds of outstanding students apply for these schools, but not many of them get in. The way elite colleges decide which students to accept is more random rather than having all the required criteria. Most of the students who apply meet the requirements of these prestigious schools, but if the college were to accept every student they liked, the college would overcrowd. So to decide on which students to accept, there are individuals who have hour-long discussions and multiple people who review every student's file. Therefore, people should stop assuming that you will get into Ivy League universities just because of your excellence.
