Session 2: My session was about planting college knowledge and cultivating buy-in. It was similar to the concept of building a college-going culture in schools and getting school leaders on board with working with GEAR UP. Our partnership grant format lends to that buy-in from schools naturally, but we know that leadership changes can impact school participation levels.

One useful idea they had was regarding how they are contacting students once they leave high school during their freshman year of college. They suggested social media platforms such as Instagram and LinkedIn with dedicated GEAR UP pages where students can receive info and communicate after high school.

Showcase: Sharing Strategic Tools & Best Practices:

Presenters discussed the Fishbone Diagram and SMART goals. The fishbone diagram helps outline potential causes connected to a problem with smaller related causes under each. This could be a useful graphic representation, while working with a team (on GUMS PD, perhaps when considering systems we use for communicating to schools, or even organizing our own collaborative work). SMART goals felt like a nice continuation of session 1 about organizing; while Gantt charts break things into smaller steps, perhaps SMART goals could complement that.

Discussion Lab: What Do Middle School Students Need? Loved this session. Interactive breakout rooms gave practical applications to ways in which we can engage middle schoolers. Not being a parent, I found this stat they cited to be very eye-opening. Middle schoolers development is changing as rapidly as development in 0-2 year olds. Holy cow, no wonder they are so hard to teach. #wranglingcats
