The opening line states, “People come in many different shades. Not colors, exactly, but shades.” The overall message of the book is that the outside appearance of our skin does not make us who we are. Our skin is just the covering. Readers cannot tell what a person/family is like from the outside. Portrait photos of families and individuals classify an assortment of shades that people can be.
