This figurative wood carving sculpture by Shui Tit Sing draws inspiration from traditional
Indonesia and Malaysia wooden longhouses raised off the ground on stilts. Depicting the daily lives of its inhabitants, the sculpture is made up of two distinct levels connected by four flights of stairs: two in front, and two on either side of the sculpture.
On the lower level are two boats, each with figures carrying a large bag of supplies. On the same level, a figure in the far right hoisting a bag walks up the stairs; while
another figure on a raised platform looks on. On the upper level are three rooms, each with distinctive figures inside: two are resting and sitting in contemplation, while another two figures appear to be cooking together and chatting.
Outside the rooms, women wash and hang the laundry, while a man squats alone, preoccupied with his tools. There is a rustic and natural approach to Shui’s carving
