Literacy should be a school-wide endeavor simple because there are too many AKS housed in the current humanities curriculum. If humanities is responsible for all of the grade level LA and SS curriculum then DAs need to look different to align with our formatives. Also writing is a huge piece that takes time which we do not have in a AKS classroom. A writing specialist would be golden.

The vision for a Humanities course is for students to learn and utilize English Language Arts skills to develop literacy of the content. ELA serves as a vehicle by which to deepen understanding of the content and provide communication opportunties pervasively within the content. Humanities serves to build global perspective, empathy, and historical knowledge.

I'd like to see Humanities team taught and blocked. For example, one a traditional four-man team, students would have math and science as 1st and 2nd academic and a Humanities block as 3rd and 4th academic. That allows for two experts in content in the classroom, two people responsible for the two areas of content, flexibility in splitting into ELA and SS for the day if needed, and removal of the stress of Humanities counting twice for promotion.

It should be the blending of those concepts that remind us of what it's like to be human. This should encompass different disciplines such as Psychology, Philosophy, Art, Literature, Sociology, which all strive to give us a deeper sense of empathy.

To me the vision would be truly get an understanding, vision, and mission statement for Humanities. This may including reviewing all the County and State standards for LA and SS at each grade level, with an eye toward, if we are making a new curriculum, which AKS may no longer be a part of this and which stay. This would also mean different County tests created just for Humanities. It is hard to truly integrate both subjects in the time alloted and still be responsible for all of the AKS for both SS and LA.

I still believe that it works to teach the skills and strategies of LA through SS. We used to pull texts to teach reading and writing skills--we can use SS texts for it instead.
