“We can not just give our students quizzes, tests, papers, and expect them to all do the same, and think that just because someone didn't do as well as someone else, that it is the student’s fault.”

The phrase "student's fault" resonates with me because blaming others does not work. This may be a radical thought to put into practice, for some. Nonetheless, this teacher is doing some self-reflection on what he or she can do differently as opposed to trying to figure out what the student can do differently. This requires a paradigm shift and is a reminder that we can not control the actions of others, but with self reflection, can work towards changing outcomes.

But I have been adapting, and this semester I feel I have been making more interpersonal connections with students and helping all students connect a bit with one another. Similarly, I want to engage my students in discussions of culture and diversity--and of their importance. I have already had a few discussions with students about culture, ethnicity, and race as they pertained to some of the literature in our curriculum, but would like to continue working on making my classroom even more of a place of acceptance, compassion, and open-mindedness.

It is important to get to know our students as learners and individuals in order to help them succeed.

Quote #6 “...much about a person is unseen.” I believe that both staff and students have a story to tell, and some are more willing to share it than others. It's difficult to know everything about students' lives outside of school; what they experience and are exposed to have an impact on who we see in school and the behaviors we see. It's also important to think about our colleagues in this way as well.

We need to continue to build meaningful relationships and use them to better understand and support our students.

With this, I am reminded that not only can we not tell what a person is truly like just by looking at them, but that we also can not understand that person until we get to know them. I use this daily both at work and in my personal life. Here at work, we must delve deeper to get to know our students & build meaningful relationships in order to better understand their world & how we can best serve them.

It made me have a serious discussion with how I use examples, where I draw on funds of knowledge from and helped me to be more critical of my own teaching habits.”

I taught one course on Adolescent Psychology as a Research assistant during my Master’s program.

Every class I examined myself. I asked myself one question: how I could remain fully committed to my students. Before each class I need to do lots of research on suitable examples about different definitions. Most of the time kids would like to hear about my real-life experiences since I am from a different culture. They showed great interest in my culture. But as a teacher I had to balance myself while furnishing adequate examples with proper etiquettes without hurting anyone's emotions and duly respecting every culture. I need to be careful about the authenticity of resources from where I am drawing my knowledge from. Example: Why do Indian parents arranged marriages? Trust-worthy instincts are the basis of an arranged marriage. Women also want a lifelong partner who is financially stable as they are, or even better. Parents' investigation perfectly analyses the core areas such as financial stability, societal reputation, outward behavioral characteristics.
