In 1983, Ieoh Ming Pei was appointed to fit out a new large entrance to receive the growing public and to organize the interior of the museum. He designed the pyramid with the access that was opened in March 1989, which symbolically was the year of the bicentenary of the French Revolution. Over time it became a tourist attraction, it occupies the center of Cour Napoleon, representing a symbol of power and abundance, also inside there is an inverted pyramid, a work that during its construction was criticized as an act of transgression.

“People call me the painter of dancing girls" -Degas.

The dark secret, this was all about prostitution, ballet and the figure of the dancer had suffered a demoralizing fate by the end of the 19th century. Performances had been reduced to polite interludes in operas, the spectacle served as a tantalizing respite for concertgoers, who could ogle the bare legs of the dancers. Sex work was part of a dancer's reality, and the city's grand opera house, the Palais Garnier, was designed with this in mind. A lavishly decorated room located backstage, called the "foyer de la danse," was a place where dancers warmed up before performances, but it also served as a sort of men's club, where wealthy men could do business, socialize, and proposition dancers. The dancers came to "train" from a very young age, mainly impoverished girls, those who supported their homes with what they earned in these places, called "little rats".
