The dark secret, this was all about prostitution, ballet and the figure of the dancer had suffered a demoralizing fate by the end of the 19th century. Performances had been reduced to polite interludes in operas, the spectacle served as a tantalizing respite for concertgoers, who could ogle the bare legs of the dancers. Sex work was part of a dancer's reality, and the city's grand opera house, the Palais Garnier, was designed with this in mind. A lavishly decorated room located backstage, called the "foyer de la danse," was a place where dancers warmed up before performances, but it also served as a sort of men's club, where wealthy men could do business, socialize, and proposition dancers.
