I decided to take the transgender implicit bias test. This was my message: Your data suggest moderate automatic preference for Cisgender People over Transgender People. I was not super surprised with that outcome, I have more experience with cisgender people but think all people deserve to be seen for who they are. I work with both adults and high school age students and I have learned alot about the struggles that my high school age students deal with. I have taken a few other tests on this website and my results are pretty close to what I identify as my current perspective.

As a social psychologist studying implicit bias and its effects on attitudes, group dynamics, impression formation, and memory, I am very familiar with the Implicit Association Test (IAT). I’ve taken it multiple times and have also incorporated it into my own research. However, I had never taken the Transgender vs. Cisgender IAT before, so I decided to give it a try.

My results showed no preference for either group, which didn’t surprise me. For years, I have intentionally worked to expose myself to diverse perspectives and individuals, aiming to prevent my brain from forming strong automatic associations between certain concepts and specific groups. This helps reduce the likelihood of activating biased associations when encountering different identities.

In my social psychology class, I assign students to take the IAT as part of our bias chapter, followed by a reflection question. I encourage them not to get defensive about their results but instead to use it as a learning opportunity—to think critically about what experiences might have shaped their associations.

At its core, the IAT measures which associations are stronger in your mind by assessing reaction time—concepts that are more strongly linked take less time to identify. These associations are shaped by everything we are exposed to: culture, social media, family, friends, and personal experiences. That’s why it’s so important to seek out diverse representations of different groups—to ensure our mental associations are more balanced and less influenced by bias.

My results showed a preference for cis gendered people. This makes sense to me as our society elevates and promotes a cis convention that is deemed often universal. Also, I was into my 30s when I learned more about trans people so I spent a lot of time in my life thinking everyone was cis.

I took the Sexuality Implicit Bias test and the results were illuminating. I had a slight preference for my identified gender which shows that I do have implicit biases. Being raised in the 80's and early 90's when the AIDS epidemic was at it's height, media messaging around homosexuality was pervasive and highly negative. Although I don't genuinely believe homosexuality is negative, those messages obviously created implicit biases. Biases can make us more guarded around others and can affect how we treat others.

I had a weak preference towards cis people. No shock: that's the societal training at work. I wonder at the utility of this framework (unconscious bias) when there is such an overwhelming explicit bias against trans people right now. I suppose at least it's easier to measure an unconscious bias with these tools, rather than an explicit bias where people would mostly lie?

I took the Sexuality Implicit Bias Test. My results showed a slight automatic preference for gay people. I have taken this test in years past, and have received similar results and tended to be no preference or this result. With the past week having been Queer Visibility Week on our campus, I believe that the influx of knowledge, both received and shared, fuels acceptance and awareness. I also believe that QVW did have influence on my results today, which I take as a positive.

I took two tests, one that measured social attitudes and one that measured association with positive and negative things. The first was predictable - I have a weak bias towards certain associations. I'd rather not cop to which one here. The second - not much there in terms of results. What was more interesting was my mindset prior to the test - eager to guess what the test was doing and correct for it so I would come out the other end without a bias detected though I am aware that I likely have these biases.

I took the career test. I had a slight to mod. bias towards male. I took the career test because I thought it would bring in topics other then male/female, so I was a little disappointed. I was a stay at home mom until age 45 and my mom was the same until age 30, so even though I'm the main provider for my family, the test indicated bias towards male and career. I honestly didn't like the test because I kept getting my right and left mixed up so the results could be inaccurate:) That being said, I'm almost at retirement age and I'm sure I have some bias built in from my upbringing.

I took the sexuality implicit bias test. The results showed that I have a preference towards my own gender and towards straight people. This is probably because of my upbringing and values of the cultures that I am surrounded by, as well as the fact that I naturally feel more comfortable around people who are most similar to me. I didn't love the test as I didn't think that the association game really tested my bias but more tested my quick-thinking skills, and I thought that a lot of the questions were a bit vague, but it was overall helpful nonetheless.

I took the transgender implicit bias test because I wanted to know if there was anything I could improve on when speaking to someone who is transgender. As neutral as I may think I may feel, one never truly knows until told otherwise. It said my results were that I had a slight automatic preference for cisgender people over transgender. I think I learned this from growing up in a strict Catholic household where there was a lot of negative connotation around people who were gay/lesbian. It never seemed to bother me like I saw it did others in my home. I think that how we grow up is engrained a lot deeper in our conscious than we think and it's important to educate ourselves if we want to make a positive impact on our youth

I took the transgender implicit bias test, as this has been the population that I have had the least exposure to until I began working with high school students. I was interested to see if any bias might affect my interactions with students. I was pleased that my results showed no discernible trace of implicit bias, but the testing modality frustrated me. I initially felt that I was being set up to fail, given how the test was designed. I realized then that I was conscious of how I was responding. If I am that concerned with how I respond to a test, then I know that I try to be consciously respectful - the idea of implicit vs explicit. I grew up in a very conservative home with very explicit biases towards races other than my own, and sexuality/gender issues were never discussed. So, to discuss transgender people would never have occurred. Having worked with teens and young adults, I have always wanted to be a person they come to for support rather than judgement.
