Not only that, but she is a popular character as Grandpa Frost's (Ded Moroz/equivalent to Santa) helper and sometimes daughter/granddaughter. He is a big figure in the entire of the slavic world (eastern, central and southern Europe) , being the main bringer of gifts in the winter, and became more culturally significant than ever under atheist communist/socialist governments, where he replaced 'Father Christmas' entirely and brought gifts on New Years (Jan. 7th). He is in the background being pulled by three horses - called a troika. The birds in the sky are both a reference to the 1952 film's opening scene, and one of the swans has a small crown to reference the Swan Princess from the Tale of Tsar Saltan.
It is constructed from papercut collage (painted with watercolours in a variety of techniques including brushes and sponges) with acetate (some painted in acrylic, some clear) to accentuate certain areas, inspired by my experimentation with acetate in prior projects. I initially used the darker gold ink, but switched to the lighter one because I vastly preferred the finish. I didn't use the silver at all. I tried mixing the gold and red, and I think that turned out really well - too much gold though would settle in the middle of the red as it dried. It's a bit hard to control but fun and makes a unique effect.
