In this poem, “Much Madness is Divinest Sense” by Emily Dickinson we see a frustrated tone showing Dickinson’s anger against the public. Dickinson was not a very outspoken person so through this poem she shows her feelings about society as her way of rebellion. What Dickinson is saying in this poem is that people who try to fit themselves into society’s idea of what “normal” is are the people who are actually mad. In the poem it says, “Assent– and you are sane— Demur—you’re straightway dangerous”. In this line she was showing how the way she saw that society would treat the people who in their definition is “mad”.

The theme of this poem, “Much Madness is Divinest Sense” is, society’s definition of sane can actually be madness. The reason Dickinson made this her theme of the poem was because this was her way of getting her thoughts out to the public because she did not leave her room to talk with others much. For example the poem states, “Demur— you’re straightway dangerous— And handled with a Chain”. Here, Dickinson was talking about how the society would treat the people who were considered mad. She also shows what the society would do to these people is actually what was madness not the people.

Near the end of the story, we are introduced to a big symbol, a chain. While agreeing with the majority makes a person seem "sane," questioning the majority makes a person immediately seem "dangerous." In the last line of the poem, it says," And handled with a Chain." This line demonstrates how society has ways of controlling these "dangerous" people. When Dickinson said, "handle" with a chain she could mean causing the people who to the public are insane, danger or injuries.

Since she did not leave her room often and was not very outspoken, the way she would get her thoughts out was through writing. She starts by saying, "Much Madness is divinest Sense" ,saying that madness to the public is really divine and is saying that madness is actually sanity.
