Problem: Harmful Algal Blooms

A harmful algal bloom is when plankton species begin to multiply rapidly when met with certain environmental conditions, warmer ocean temperatures caused by climate change contribute to this growth. Submarine filter feeders intake these plankton and therefore can be contaminated with algal-driven toxins. When people eat such submarine filter feeders such as clams and scallops these toxins can lead to sickness, brain damage, or even death.

Regional tribal communities formed the Southeast Alaska Tribal Toxins (SEATT) which will help combat the risks of being infected by HABs in the shellfish harvests in Alaska. Their purpose is to assess the beaches in areas where the state cannot test to reduce the risk of HABs in places that are not monitored and help people avoid getting sick from further HABs cases.

Currently people in the SEATT organization and environmental staff from participating tribes learn to use phytoplankton nets, filtering apparatus, and identification tools to help identify HABs. They will keep continuous monitoring on the oceans to mitigate the risks of encountering another HABs case. However, they dont have a solution to target the causation of the plankton specifically, besides for reducing climate change.
