Imagine being in a country that is over ten times more densely populated than the US. That is what it is like to live in Japan. They make use of this population though. They do things such as make platforms on hills for more space, to making the fastest trains in the world to help with their high energy rush hour.

Due to the extreme population of Japan, people live in extremely small living spaces. The average size home in Tokyo Japan is 750 square feet while in the US, it is around 2,000 square feet. Although that is the average, there are even more petite houses.

Article on Capsule hotels.

Below is an example of someone's house that they live in.

With their insane population, their rush hour is just a little lengthy. The average commute time in Tokyo is an hour and a half each day. They even have people with jobs and all they do is wear gloves and push people into public transportation to make sure everyone fits. To help with all the time this all takes, the Japanese have invented the fastest trains ever called bullet trains for quicker transportation.

Land use can lead to some conflicts in Japan. Everyone needs room to live and if you try to take that away, they will fight for it. To make the most out of land use, the Japanese have been making buildings taller and taller. The trouble with this is that it is a very active earthquake zone. Another safer way to do things is building underground too. Also they make their own land by filling wetlands in with dirt and such. They cut into hills and such to make flat platforms called terraces for farming their most important crop: Rice.

With all their population they need lots of crops and places to live. Unfortunately, only about an eighth is arable land to live and plant crops on. The rest has mountains and hills everywhere making life difficult. They make due though by building into mountains and using the absolute most of the land they have. However, it is very dangerous to build high buildings due to an active earthquake zone.

Mount Fuji, Japan

When you have this many people in one place, each person creating 2 to 3 pounds of trash every day, it leads to rats, flies, and disease. Not only this but also sewage, pollution and more. They have lots of acid rain and the pollution is so bad, most people wear masks to help with it. When you have an illness in a place like this, it spreads like wild fire. Think of how many things you touch every day. Now multiply that by 12 million. If one person gets sick and goes on the subway the disease is probably spread to 50 people.
