It starts with a view of an empty page of paper, then as the pages start to turn, details are drawn in to reveal Mickey Mouse in Steamboat Willie.

Cel animation is the art of creating 2D animation by hand on sheets of transparent plastic called “cels”. Following a planning process, animators transfer draft drawings onto transparent sheets of plastic called cels. Examples include the Simpsons and Sponge-bob.
Cell animation is mostly used in anime shows due to the fast paced action that is being traditionally used in the shows. However shows such as the Simpsons and sponge-bob use the format as well.
2D animation
The last 2D animated Movie was 9 years ago in Winnie the pooh, this is due to 3D animated features being more detailed and interesting to the eye.
However, 2D animation (cel animation) has expanded out to TV series's phone apps and short projects. In fact there are a lot more 2D animation projects that use cel animation used than ever due to it being a lot more cheaper in costs to produce.
This Ninja run adds to the wider context of 2D animation due to it being a good example of how 2D is being used other than in movies and TV shows.

Rotoscoping is the process of manually altering film footage one frame at a time.
An example of Rotoscoping is in Guardians of the Galaxy. Despite the range of digital technologies available the Guardians of the galaxy production crew decided to use rotoscoping to make rocket the raccoon look more realistic by copying the features of a real life raccoon called Oreo, they did this through rotoscoping.
Rotoscoping was first used back in 1935 when Disney produced the movie 'snow white and the seven dwarves'. Since then a range of movies where made with rotoscoping including life action movies such as the bride of Frankenstein 2 years after snow white. However rotoscoping was not used throughout the entire movie until a scanner darkly came out in 2007.
This is yet another example on how 2D animation has relevance to the modern day world rather than 3D animation. This is due the production crew used 2D animation rather than 3D animation due to rotoscoping providing a more realistic option of the raccoon.

Matt Groaning: Matt Groaning was born on the 15th of February 1952. He started his animating career in a news article where he drew cartoons and then went on to draw for hit TV show 'Futurama'. He is most known for writing and creating one of the most famous cartoon shows called the Simpsons. The Simpsons is arguably responsible for the majority of family and televisions shows today. Modern Family and Family Guy have both stated that they got their inspiration form the Simpsons.
Matt Groaning made the decision to carry on using an old animation technique that most shows decide not to use due to it not being time efficient. The process they use is the layout process. This is where each animator works on a specific scene or character in order to get as much detail in the finished product as possible. This is a big risk due to the amount of animators Disney would have to hire in order to make the a single episode. It takes 15 drawings to finish one single scene.
