This small group will provide strategies and goals for sixth-graders at Covington Middle School who are struggling to transition to a new school socially and academically during virtual and hybrid learning. The transition from elementary to middle school is one of the largest transitions for students, and in the year 2020, it is even more difficult due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and the introduction of virtual and hybrid learning. This group will provide strategies for time management, staying organized digitally, and making meaningful peer and teacher connections online and in person.

Once the students have been identified, the school counselor will meet with each student individually to conduct a screening. In each screening the counselor will tell students about the group including, but not limited to, the topic, the goals for the group, and the expectations of being part of the group. Once the group is explained to the student, the counselor will then ask the student if he or she is interested in participating in the group, if the student understands what being in the group involves, and if the student has any questions regarding the group.

After all the students who were on the needs support list have been interviewed and screened, the counselor will then pick the students. The students will be picked based on their willingness and desire to be a part of the group, if the student has experienced a crisis blocking participation in the group, and the overall ability for the student to engage and interact fully.

(Missouri Professional School Counselors and Counselor Educations, 2015)

This leadership provides structure and guidance, but allows the students in the group to be mindful of their participation and engagement in the decisions of the group. This leadership allows students to have a voice. It is important that this group learns to have a voice and that he or she is responsible for their goals and successes.

(Cherry, 2020)
