If you are caring to others, good things will come back to you.

When My Name Was Keoko: Keoko really cared for her brother Tae Yul, she kept sending letters to him when he was in the air force. Because she cared about her brother, her brother was able to come back. If Keoko did not care about her brother and did not send letters to him, her brother wouldn't have came back.

Secondly, Keoko was worried and cared for Ms.Ann. Therefore, she taught him how to count in Japanese. This all came back to her by none of them getting tortured by the soldiers, and the war eventually ended. If Keoko didn't care about Ms.Ann, they would've all gotten in trouble by the soldiers.

A single Shard: Tree Ear also cared for Crane Man. Whenever Min gave Tree Ear food to eat, Tree ear only ate half and left the other half for Crane Man. This was because Tree ear was worried that crane man would be hungry. Because of this, Crane Man and Tree ear got a better relationship, and they were both very healthy.

Crane man always gave motivation and positive advice to Tree ear, This is because he cares for Tree ear. Due to all of this motivation and advice, Tree ear was able to become a successful potter. If tree ear didn't get much advice and motivation, he would've been discouraged and not able to become a successful potter.

patterns/pacing

the author uses similar patterns in her stories. In the book When My Name was Keoko, the author does not put many humor in the book, but sometimes I can tell that she tries to use sarcasm in the story. There are no flashbacks in the story. Here are two perspective in the book When My Name Was Keoko, they are- Sunhee and TaeYul. In the book A Single Shard, I think that the author’s patterns are the same. This shows that it really is her style of writing. One of the things she always does is; she does not put much emotion for the characters in the book. This is very confusing when I try to analyze the character. In the book When My Name Was Keoko, the author does not put much emotion for Keoko when the Japanese soldiers were in her house. There was only action. Because of this, I was very confused in how Keoko felt, and I had to guess her emotions. In the book A Single Shard, Tree Ear's emotions are not shown, so when he is trying hard to become the master of pottery, I did not know how he felt about it.

Unlike the author's patterns, I really liked the author's pacing in the story. Since the author tends to write a lot about Korean History, she explains clearly everything about it. At the beginning of the book, she starts slowly, explaining the setting and characters. The, she goes fast with the actions in the story towards the end. In the book When My Name was Keoko, the author explained the characters and the history of Korea during the world war two. Later on, the author went fast with the actions. This is the same for all the other books she wrote, she tried to explain the setting and characters in the beginning, then tried to finish the story by going fast with her actions.

Author's Techniques

When My Name was Keoko- “A shame...your uncle...not safe...especially today…”I raised my head in a stunned realization. Tomo had brought me a warning. Something bad was going to happen. To uncle. I dropped the lunch box that held Uncle’s dinner and began to run."

A single shard- ”I have brought my own bowl today, so as not to inconvenience the honorable potter’s wife,” he said. Tree ear’s plan was to eat only half his food, leave the bowl hidden somewhere, and take the other half home to Crane man at the end of the day.

These two scenes show that the character is caring. However, the author uses different techniques and goals to achieve this.

The techniques the author used for both scenes were: Revealing actions, tone, and dialogue. The two scenes revealed that the characters in the scene are very caring. Keoko was caring because she was worried about her uncle so she went to find him, but Tree ear is caring because he cares for Crane man, so he is saving food for him. The tone for these 2 scenes are both building suspense. By using some inner thinking in the first scene, the author tries to really make everyone worried about someone, and make them seem like a very caring person.

I liked the techniques and goals the author used, because she really shows the scene with actions of the characters. Also, since she uses a lot of inner thinking, it really helps to analyze the scene and know what is happening.
