However, sometimes bad things happen without good things coming afterward. On 9/11, many innocent civilians and first responders died and countless others were injured. The effects that followed the event itself though, are arguably even worse. Islamophobia and racism towards anyone with Middle Eastern features skyrocketed and the stereotype of Muslims being violent terrorists is still prevalent today. In pursuit of revenge, the US government has been involved in over 20 years of conflict in the Middle East. However, many find it hard to believe that these wars were started in good faith and that monetary profit may be a larger goal than the government cares to admit. These wars which have questionable motivations have not helped the countries they claim they want to rid of terrorism and improve the quality of life. In fact, they have devastated these areas by killing civilians and demolishing important buildings such as schools and hospitals while trying to kill terrorists. When the US government causes pain abroad, terrorists go to those displaced people and tell them that they are fighting the people who caused this, ultimately creating more hostility towards US forces. Instead of learning from 9/11 that attacking heavily populated areas only causes more pain and resentment, they have gone on to create even more pain and conflict overseas. As well as starting wars, the government has also enacted laws like the Patriot Act that encroach on the personal liberties of American citizens in the name of preventing terrorism. Other crises in America such as homelessness or the opioid epidemic that kill more yearly than 9/11 do not receive nearly as much funding as the US military gets to continue the "war on terror." In summary, it took ten years to hunt down Osama Bin-Laden, the leader of Al-Qaeda, as well as Khalid Sheikh Mohammad, the mastermind behind the attacks. The ongoing campaign to finish Al-Qaeda for good enticed us to go into Iraq to ensure there were no nuclear weapons there, an effort which ended in a regime change and the execution of Saddam Hussein. Following Al-Qaeda's fall, new terrorist forces, most notably ISIS (ISIL), emerged and threatened to take over many parts of the Arabic Peninsula as well as North Africa. To ensure stability in the region, the US maintained military efforts there. After this long campaign of 20 years, trillions of dollars, and thousands of fallen soldiers, what was going on in the world in the mean time?

From the end of the Cold War to 2001, the United States was undeniably the world's greatest power. The Soviet Union had fallen, and the economies of her descendants were weak at the time. 
But with America focusing on the middle east, how did the adversaries of democracy take advantage?

Case One, Russia: During the last twenty years, Russia's power and influence in the world has increased exponentially. Headed by the powerful Vladimir Putin, Russia has made many strides to increase her power. In the late 2000s, Russia invaded the region of Crimea, which was held by Ukraine. This threatened not only Ukrainian sovereignty in the region, but also impacted food supply and human rights. This was arguably the first show of force by Russia to show that she was back on top of the world stage. Next, and perhaps most importantly for Americans, it has been confirmed that the Russian government attempted to influence the 2016 US general election, allegedly attempting to harm the campaign of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Lastly, Russia has taken great strides to revamp its Soviet-era military by rapidly expanding their Navy and Air Force, and by developing new types of even more lethal nuclear deliverance systems.

Case Two, PRC: Since the 70s, China has been rapidly expanding economically. However, while the Pentagon was focusing its efforts on the middle east, China was also expanding its military. China now has a bigger navy than the US, something unthinkable a mere decade ago. They have been using this navy to exert hitherto unseen amounts of influence in the Pacific region, most notably in the South China sea and in the Republic of China (Taiwan). Due to our binding agreement with Taiwan, these new naval efforts have quickly become a threat to US interests in the region. Additionally, China has been rapidly expanding it's nuclear stockpile, with an increase of over 100 warheads since 2017. Lastly, China's economic influence in the region has damaged the US' relations with her allies, as China has signed multiple trade deals with our closest allies in the region, specifically Australia, India, Philippines and many other nations in southeast Asia. This will make it harder for us to count on our allies if the US goes into conflict with China.
