I will introduce the function machine to the whole

class by relating it to an assembly line: something goes in,

then something is done to it, and something else comes out!

     Vocabulary:

input output function sum difference

product quotient

We will do several test runs, beginning with the input and rule

both being given. Students will work in small groups to find the

output. After several practice sessions, students groups will make

a function table with inputs and a rule and exchange with another

group.

The next step to occur will be when I display the input numbers and the output numbers, and students find the rule. Again, students will work in small groups to decide what the rule might be. We will gradually work from simple rules to functions with more than one step.

Again, after whole class practice, students will work in small groups to make a function table with inputs and outputs provided, and the rule hidden under a flap. They will then exchange with other groups to solve!
