G64&5 - CONSEQUENCES OF PLASTICS IN THE OCEAR RESEARCH ACTIVITY - BOYS by

Objective:
Explore the lifecycle of plastic products and understand the environmental impact of plastic waste.
Instructions:
•	Choose a Plastic Product: Select a commonly used plastic product in your household, such as a plastic water bottle, plastic bag, or packaging from a snack.
•	Research the Product: Look at the product and note any recycling symbols or information about the type of plastic (e.g., PET, HDPE).
o	Briefly research what this type of plastic is commonly used for and why it is chosen for these purposes.
•	Trace the Lifecycle: Think about where this product came from (manufacturing and distribution) and how it came to be in your home.
•	Predict what will happen to it after you dispose of it. Will it be recycled, end up in a landfill, or possibly in the ocean?
•	Write a short paragraph on the potential environmental impact if the plastic is not properly disposed of.
•	Suggest one way to reduce this impact, such as recycling, using alternatives, or reusing the product.
•	Reflection: Share what you found most surprising or important during this activity.

Life cycle of Plastic Water Bottle by Sultan Al Madani

Most disposable water bottles are made of Polyethylene Terephthalene (PET), it is the common plastic for single-use bottles. It is a strong, clear, and lightweight material used for many food and beverage containers. You can find the recycling code on the bottle's bottom.

Manufacturing:

Raw materials like PET are melted and formed into small tubes and inject it to the molding machine to form the bottles. After labeling, it will undergo to the quality control to inspect the quality standards.

Distribution:

It starts with packaging the bottles then shipping it to the distribution center and sent to various points of sale. Businesses use a combination of retail partnership and e-commerce platforms to make all the products accessible to consumers.

After I dispose my used water bottles, I am sure that it will be recycled because I am throwing it in the proper place.

There's a huge bad impact if the plastic is not properly disposed. The environment will be in trouble because of pollution. Since, plastic cannot be easy to decompose it will end up to some places and mostly in seas and oceans. If the plastic stay in the ocean it will be more of a problem, it will destroy marine animals. Recycling will be a good thing to do to keep our environment clean, safe and sustainable. We can protect our environment by recycling and reducing the use of plastic.

I found out that the process of making plastic is very difficult and requires more time to distribute it to people. I also learned that it will take too much time to decomposed it so it will be better if we don't throw our garbages improperly.

I picked a berain water bottle as my plastic product the type of plastic they use is polyethylene terephthalate (PET) plastic and they advice you to recycle. This bottle was manufactured by the company that produces water bottles berain and it came to our house from a company that ships water bottles. If I dispose it i think it will land in a landfill. If its not disposed correctly i think it could end up in the ocean since some people do not care about theyre environment. To reduce this impact we can try to reduce the use of plastic bottles and recycle plastic bottles, the thing I found very interesting is that plastic has many types instead of just one.

The Process of Plastic Straws Between Oceans (Faisal Alhajiri)

Plastic straws are generally a big, big problem in our oceans, it is very slim, so it is difficult for sea creatures, not having the complex brains of humans, commonly mistake the straw as food, causing them to choke, or the straw gets into the nose, causing immense nose bleed. Plastic straws are single use items made from polypropylene and petroleum based plastics, they are non biodegradable, so they don’t decompose in a human lifespan, most likely taking millions of years to decompose. They normally end up in homes, as many children drink and bring juice to school. We can help reduce this by protesting against this and using paper straws that don’t harm the environment. Plastic straws are one of the most common forms of plastic that get thrown into the ocean. About 100,000 sea creatures are estimated to die due to this tragedy each year. If we dispose this production, it would get sent to a recycling center and would be used for better things.

What water bottles can do to the ocean

Plastic water bottles in the ocean can have serious consequences for humans. As they break down into microplastics, these tiny plastic particles are eaten by fish and other sea creatures that people often consume. This means microplastics can enter the human body through seafood, and while the long-term health effects are still being studied, early research suggests possible links to hormone disruption, inflammation, and other health issues. Additionally, plastic pollution harms the fishing and tourism industries, which many communities depend on for their livelihoods. The cleanup costs also fall on taxpayers, making it not just an environmental problem but an economic one too. Also Water bottles, especially single-use plastic ones, have become a major source of marine pollution. When improperly disposed of, these bottles often end up in rivers and oceans, where they can take hundreds of years to decompose. Over time, they break down into microplastics, which are ingested by marine animals, disrupting ecosystems and entering the food chain. This pollution not only threatens marine life but also affects human health and coastal economies that rely on clean water and tourism. The widespread presence of plastic bottles in the sea highlights the urgent need for better waste management, recycling systems, and a shift toward reusable alternatives

I chose the Nova Water Bottle and its facts. The main way its produced is the PET production cycle. Its lifecycle is pretty long so i will shorten it to 7 things that the bottle goes through. The 7 things that the bottle are 1. Material Production 2. Bottle Manufacture 3. Water Treatment and Filling 4. Distribution and consumption 5. End of life 6. Recycling feed-in 7. Potential repetition. After I use it, it could be anywhere from the ocean, landfill, recycling centre, a plastic bag, a trashbin, or even back where it started, the factory. If not recycled or not used properly, it could kill many marine animals, plants, etc. What i found really important or interesting is the fact how many cycles these bottles can possibly go through. It can range from 0 to even 700. But that would never happen, right?

One commonly used plastic product is plastic bags.

Plastic bag recycling involves collecting, sorting, and cleaning plastic films, which are then shredded into small pieces. These pieces are melted and reformed into pellets that can be used to create new products like plastic lumber or new bags.

The life cycle of a plastic bag begins with the extraction of raw materials like crude oil and natural gas, followed by manufacturing into polyethylene resins and then into finished bags. The bags are then used for a short period before being disposed of, where they enter a final phase of decomposition that can take hundreds of years, or be sent to recycling or landfills. But unfortunately most of the plastic bags are thrown away to end up at the oceans, which leads to many dramatic problems mainly in the marine life causing many animals to die choking from it. The best way to reduce the impact of this problem is by creating a huge campaign of awareness to replace plastic bags with paper bags.

Plastic pollution in the ocean has severe environmental, ecological, and human consequences. Here’s a breakdown of the main effects:

🌊

1. Harm to Marine Life

Ingestion: Fish, turtles, seabirds, and marine mammals mistake plastic for food. Once ingested, plastic can cause internal injuries, block digestion, and lead to starvation.

Entanglement: Animals can become trapped in discarded fishing nets, six-pack rings, or plastic bags, leading to drowning, suffocation, or severe injury.

Bioaccumulation: Microplastics (tiny fragments <5mm) are consumed by plankton and small fish, entering the food chain and concentrating up through predators.

⚗️

2. Chemical Pollution

Plastics leach toxic chemicals such as BPA, phthalates, and flame retardants into seawater.

These chemicals can disrupt hormone systems (endocrine disruption) and harm reproductive and developmental health in marine organisms—and potentially humans.

🪸

3. Damage to Ecosystems

Coral reefs: Plastics can smother coral, block sunlight, and spread pathogens that cause coral disease.

Seafloor and beaches: Plastic debris alters habitats, suffocates bottom-dwelling organisms, and affects the physical structure of shorelines.

🧍‍♀️

4. Human Health Risks

Humans may ingest microplastics through seafood, salt, and even drinking water.

While research is ongoing, microplastics have been found in human blood and organs, raising concerns about long-term health effects.

💰

5. Economic Impact

Fishing industry: Fish stocks decline due to polluted ecosystems and contaminated catches.

Tourism: Polluted beaches and coastal areas deter visitors.

Clean-up costs: Removing plastic waste from oceans and coasts is extremely expensive and logistically difficult.

🌎

6. Long-Term Environmental Consequences

Plastic does not biodegrade; it breaks down into smaller pieces but persists for centuries.

Ocean currents form garbage patches, such as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, concentrating millions of tons of waste.

Climate link: Plastic production and degradation release greenhouse gases, contributing to global warming.

Usually we want to stop using plastic because of its harm but if we recycle them and make our own plastic wastes at home instead of in the environment then maybe plastic can be safe to use. This activity tought me that if you use stuff the right way they won’t be as harmful.

WATER BOTTLES have many symbols including numbers inside a triangle they are also usually made or manufactured in chine, United States, Asia, and in Europe water bottles can also be in my home in the fridge because that’s where I get my water supplies from. And from my prediction it will most likely end up in a landfill or ocean with a small percentage of being recycled, a short paragraph on the potential impact on the environment is by consuming large amount of fossil fuels and releasing harmful greenhouse gases, but a solution is recycling and reusing the product.

The item i chose is a Montana water bottle it is used too often in my household.

It has 1 recycling symbol and the type of plastic is tritan and it also says it also says that the water came from Italy and the brand was made in Italy. What i think would happen was if it is recycled it could be use to make other products. In my opinion if it is just thrown in the ocean or on the ground it could be dangerous because marine animals could eat it, and humans could trip and get seriously injured. A way to reduce plastic waste is actually recycle instead of just throwing it on the street. What really shocked me was that there is plastic almost everywhere u go.

Plastic water bottles are very common because many people drink water from them every day. But when we throw them away, they can cause pollution and hurt the environment. Instead of wasting them, we should recycle plastic water bottles. Recycling helps turn old bottles into new ones or other useful things. To recycle we can rinse the bottles, remove the caps, and put them in a recycling bin. This way, fewer bottles end up in landfills or the ocean and we help keep our planet clean and healthy.

My plastic item is a plastic water bottle. It is made of R-PET plastic (Recycled PET plastic) which is strong and clean. Since this water bottle is based on the Nova water bottle, it gets delivered from trucks used to hold big water bottle packages, and transported into houses with wagons. If disposed, it will most likely end up in a landfill. Unless you use recycling bins or machines (like me), it will of course be recycled. If it was disposed of incorrectly (on the streets, beaches, floor, etc.), it will most likely end up in undesirable places over time. Such as oceans, on the road, etc. The environment will get worse even if you don't notice it, since a lot more people than you expect probably also throw plastic materials (or any other one use item, for that matter) in incorrect places. The environmental impacts can include water pollution, marine animals death and non pleasant driving. One of the many other ways (and the most obvious one) is to keep it until you find a bin (preferably a recycle one) and throw it in there. It is very simple and helpful. It sometimes astonishes me how careless people are towards our environment.

I choose plastic bottles because me and my family use lots of plastic like drinking a plastic water bottle and throwing it in the trash. This action could cause plastic in the oceans and seas, it can also harm marine animals life by tangling them with waste and could cause to their death.

PET (Polyethylene Terephthalate), is one of the recycling symbols for one time use water bottles. It means that it is easily 100% recyclable. PP (Polypropylene), is found on bottle caps, and means It is recyclable.

The life cycle of a water bottle begins with raw materials like crude oil, then transformed into plastic and then into bottles. After being filled in the factory and sent to supermarkets, we buy the bottles and drink the water. We then throw the plastic bottle away, it can end up in a land for hundreds of years and harm tye nature, or it can be recycled to be made into new products like plastic bags.

If plastic water bottles are not properly disposed it can be harmful to the environmental, such as pollution, harm wildlife, and causing chemical toxicity in water and soil. Water bottles can stay in the environment for hundreds or even thousands of years if they are not recycled well.

Interesting fact I have learned from this activity is that recycling one plastic water bottle can save enough energy to power a light bulb for many hours, and recycling all plastic bottles in a year can save enough energy to power a house for a year.

I want

to know about plastic bottles. They can last a long time because of recycling but some people don’t want to recycle and think they are cooler then every one so they throw it in the ocean . Well I think there is a lot of solutions to stop throwing plastic in the ocean but there is one that stands out the most which is recycling, and the thing I found most surprising is how they aren’t recycling because they just want every marine life animal to die.

Plastic bottles are very dangerous for animals in the ocean because they will mistake it for food and then it will get caught up in their throat, we have to recycle all of the harmful products like plastic bags, plastic bottles, and much more. So the moral of this paragraph is to learn to recycle and throw plastic products into the correct bin.

The product that I will talk about is plastic water bottles. There is a recycling symbol 1 which says it is made from PET. PET is durable and not expensive. The bottle begins as crude oil, then melted and molded into bottles then filled up with water. After use, it can be collected, cleaned and reprocessed into a new product. But most of the time it ends up in trash and cause plastic pollution. It also causes environmental damage. In oceans, it breaks into microplastics which harm animals and our food. To reduce this pollution we should resuse and recycle the bottles or replace it with glass bottles. I learned that 30% of PET bottles are recycled worldwide.
