Since most of the the children were poor, they couldn't afford to miss a day. This led to them working twelve hours a day, seven days a week. Most of them didn't have shoes and coats so they could step on stuff that is laying on the street that could cut their feet. They also had to work when it was cold even if they didn't have a coat which would cause them to get sick and possibly die, especially in Northern cities like New York
