This phenomenon is extremely common in more developed coastal areas such as Shanghai, parents would force their Children to start learning to play at least one music instruments as early as in kindergarten, followed by relentless grade tests and competitions, just to fulfill their own ego. 
However, parents are not the only one responsible for this superstition. Confucianism had predominated Chinese people's minds for thousands of years, and Confucianism is the core keystone of the mainstream ideology in China. Generally, it is spread by books, literature, and historical readings.
Confucianism is best understood as an ethical guide to life and living with strong character.
People indoctrinated in it will be taught to keep polite and genuine all the time, and they will maintain a mindset of always being altruistic.
It does implicate people to clarify their status in the systematic hierarchy, which is served for the reign. Incidentally, the patriarchy also accounts for a great part. The book written by Confucian school is categorical and stable, no one could change or modify it. It is already a sacred scripture in the majority of the people.

Politically, it claims that the authority of the king was entitled to God's will, and the ones who do not trust it are all pagans, in other words, it is a kind of intangible culture disseminated by generations and conventions.
