Name : Nicola Naomas Damaris Aritonang

Class : X.10

Number : 31

Title: Cinderella and the Bankrupt Prince

Summary: this is a humorous retelling of the classic Cinderella. This time it is not a handsome prince who is rich, but he is bankrupt with worries of how to pay his creditors. When he shows up at the ball for some life partner, he is more interested in money. The fairy godmother is another salesperson and goes to Cinderella trying to convince her to "buy" magic like in an infomercial. The story ends with Cinderella meeting her prince, but rather than getting married, he is forced to sell brushes door to door.

Comparison with the Original Tale: Cinderella is a romance fairy tale where the fairy godmother transforms Cinderella so that she can go to the royal ball and win the heart of the handsome prince. The prince searches for her, with the glass slipper, and then they live happily ever after. However, in Cinderella and the Bankrupt Prince, the setting and characters is a comedic style. The prince is broke, the fairy godmother is a sort of salesperson, and any problem related to money becomes a priority over love. The prince, finds himself in brush sales instead of being happily married, therefore, changing the ending of the classic fairy tale to be more humorous.

Name : Ni Komang Bunga Meiyani Putri

Class : X.10

Number : 21

•The Fractured Story of Timun Mas

In a small, quiet village, there lived a kind old widow and her only daughter, Timun Mas. They lived a quiet life with joy. One bright morning, while Timun Mas was exploring the garden, she found a mysterious seed among the leaves. Out of curiosity, she showed it to her mother, who urged her to plant it. Timun Mas carefully buried the seed in their garden, hoping for a little miracle.

Next, a giant cucumber-like plant grew overnight, towering over the house. As Timun Mas admired the large plant, a terrifying giant emerged from the forest. He was a greedy creature, who had heard about the magic seed and was determined to take it for himself. The giant demanded that Timun Mas immediately give him the plant, but she refused because it was the key to her family's happiness. The giant became angry and threatened to destroy the house.

Desperate and afraid, Timun Mas remembered the small bag containing the magic seeds that her mother had hidden. She immediately grabbed the bag and threw the seeds at the giant. Instantly, the seeds turned into thick fog, confusing the giant and making him lost. While he was confused, Timun Mas and her mother ran to find a safe place. The giant, unable to find them, finally gave up and returned to the forest. The magical plant continued to grow, providing the family with plenty of food and ensuring their happiness for years to come.

• DIFFERENCES FROM THE ORIGINAL STORY

The golden cucumber came from a cucumber seed that was given to a giant by a widow who lived alone and the widow promised to give it to the giant when the golden cucumber grew up. After growing up, the widow did not have the heart to give it to the giant and had the idea to set a trap and put it in a bag for the golden cucumber to take, the trap succeeded in defeating the giant and now the golden cucumber can live happily ever after with the widow.

After losing his job, their father sent them to live with their estranged aunt in a run-down neighborhood. Their aunt was unkind and eventually took them to an abandoned subway tunnel, where she locked them inside and left them behind. The tunnels were dark and eerie, but the siblings used their intelligence to navigate through hidden passages and find a way out. They emerged near a city park, where kind volunteers helped them contact their father. The authorities arrested their aunt, and their father, who had found a new job, welcomed them back. They moved to a safer place and lived happily as a family again.

Original Story: Hansel and Gretel

Hansel and Gretel lived with their woodcutter father and stepmother in a small house near the forest. Their stepmother was cruel, and their father, unable to provide for them, abandoned them deep in the woods. Hansel had left a trail of breadcrumbs to find their way home, but birds ate them, leaving the children lost. They wandered until they found a house made of candy, owned by a wicked witch. The witch trapped Hansel in a cage, planning to eat him, and forced Gretel to cook. Cleverly, Hansel tricked the witch by giving her a stick instead of his finger when she checked if he was fat enough. One day, Gretel pushed the witch into the oven, freeing Hansel. They took the witch’s treasure and found their way home, where they discovered their stepmother had died. Reunited with their father, they lived happily ever after.

The difference : in fractured story hansel and gretel look for a way out of the underground tunnel and make it out, the original story is gretel kills the witch at the end of the fractured story: dad gets a new job and in the original story hansel & gretel find the witch's treasure.

One day, he was asked by his mother to deliver some homemade food to his grandmother, who lived in a quiet suburban area. Instead of a dark forest, Ruby has to go through virtual reality—her grandmother relies on virtual world communication and home automation networks.

While walking around the city, Ruby received a message from her grandmother's account: "Come quickly, honey. I'm having a problem with my computer." Ruby was suspicious and realised something was wrong—the message was written in a way that her grandmother would never use.

Having knowledge in cybersecurity, Ruby verifies the sender's IP address. It's not in his grandmother's location! Knowing that the hacker had taken over her grandmother's smart home network, Ruby quickly went to her place. When he arrived there, he saw a man wearing a hoodie on his grandmother's office desk, trying to enter her bank account.

Acting fast, Ruby pretended she didn't know. "Grandma, your password is still the same, right?" He shouted. The hacker, thinking he was stupid, stopped his operation and listened. Meanwhile, Ruby activates a security application on her phone that locks all online access and warns the authorities.

Within a few minutes, the police arrived and arrested the hacker. Ruby resets all of her grandmother's passwords and sets up better security measures. "You are my little guardian," said his grandmother, while hugging him. Since that day, Ruby has become a supporter of local cybersecurity, teaching people how to stay safe online.

The Difference Between Modern Stories and Traditional Fairy Tales:

In the first story, the story takes place in a dark forest and a small cottage; in the new version of the story, the story takes place in an urban town, where technology reigns. And the bad guy in the first story is a wolf who can disguise himself as a grandmother; in the new story, the bad guy is a cyber hacker who enters Grandma's smart home.

The difference is, instead of three bears, there are three clever and cunning dinosaurs. They deliberately leave the house, hoping that a little girl will come inside so they can catch her. Goldilocks arrives, enters the dinosaurs' house, tries their food, sits on their chair, and lies down on their bed. Luckily, before the dinosaurs return, Goldilocks feels something strange and immediately runs away.

Differences from the Original Story: In the original story, Goldilocks and the Three Bears, Goldilocks accidentally enters the bears' house, tries their food and stuff, and runs away when the bears come home. However, in this engineered version, the bears are replaced by dinosaurs, and they plan to trap Goldilocks on purpose. The atmosphere of the story is funnier, more exciting, and full of surprises. If in the original version Goldilocks is only curious, in this version she must be clever in order to escape the dinosaurs' trap.

The dwarfs help the Queen by creating a magical apple to purge Snow White’s greed, but it kills her instead. Mourned in a forest coffin, Prince Charming’s pity kiss accidentally revives her, cleansing her evil. Reformed, Snow White and the Prince marry happily. Roles reverse: the “villain” becomes a hero, and the stepmother stays virtuous.

Original story:

a vain and jealous Queen orders Snow White’s death after her magic mirror declares the young princess as the “fairest of them all.” Snow White flees and finds refuge with seven dwarfs, but the Queen tricks her into eating a poisoned apple, causing her to fall into a death-like sleep. The dwarfs place her in a glass coffin, where she is later discovered by a Prince. His kiss of true love breaks the curse, reviving Snow White. They marry, and the Queen is punished for her wickedness, often depicted as dancing in red-hot iron shoes until she dies. The story emphasizes innocence, jealousy, and the triumph of good over evil.

Comparison with the original story:

This fractured tale subverts the original by making Snow White as the greedy villain, while her stepmother (the Queen) is benevolent, aided by dwarfs who attempt to reform Snow White. Instead of a poison apple from the Queen, the dwarfs create a magic apple to purge her evil backfiring and “killing” her. Prince Charming’s pity-driven kiss (not love) revives her, erasing her malice, unlike the original’s romantic rescue. The Queen avoids villainy, Snow White undergoes moral redemption (not just revival), and the story prioritizes ethical transformation over punishing jealousy, flipping the “evil stepmother” trope entirely.

When he returned to his hometown, he was ashamed to admit his poor mother and threw her out. His disappointed mother cursed Malin to turn into a stone.

Fractured Story: The Regretful Malin Kundang Malin continued to travel and was successful. When he returned, he was initially hesitant to admit his mother because he was afraid of losing his self-esteem. However, after seeing his mother's sacrifice, Malin came to his senses and apologized before it was too late. His mother forgave him, and Malin chose to stay in the village to take care of his mother.

Differences in the Story:

1. Malin's fate → Original version: cursed to turn into a stone. Fractured version: regretted and corrected his mistakes.

2. Malin's attitude → Original version: remained arrogant until the end. Fractured version: realized before it was too late.

3. End of story → The original version ends tragically, while the fractured ends happily with Malin atoning for his mistakes.

The original story emphasizes the punishment for the disobedient child, where Malin is cursed to become a stone with no chance of redemption. While in the fractured story, Malin realizes his mistake before it is too late, apologizes, and his mother forgives him. The changed moral is that everyone can make mistakes, but awareness, regret, and the courage to improve oneself can change a tragic ending for the better.

Penniless, Pinocchio and Geppetto wander the streets until the Good Fairy reappears and reveals that Pinocchio’s “real” father is actually J. Quincy Flogg, the network head. Overjoyed, Pinocchio gains a starring role in a soap opera despite having no acting talent, and Flogg couldn’t be prouder of his newfound “son.” The story subverts the traditional moral arc, ending on a satirical note about show‑business nepotism.

Comparison with the Original Tale:

Original Author & Tone: Carlo Collodi’s 1883 novel The Adventures of Pinocchio is a serialized children’s story emphasizing moral lessons—Pinocchio learns honesty, hard work, and obedience through a series of often dark and perilous adventures.

Setting & Context: Collodi’s tale unfolds in 19th‑century Italy with realistic village settings and folkloric elements; Jacobs’s version relocates the action to a modern television network, satirizing media culture.

Character Motivations: In the original, Pinocchio’s transformations (e.g., into a donkey) punish his misbehavior; here, his change into a “real boy” is an instant, consequence‑free reward that immediately undercuts the narrative by cancelling his show.

Perspective & Humor: Collodi’s narrative voice is earnest and didactic, guiding readers through moral growth; Jacobs employs irony and absurdity, mocking both the fairy‑tale genre and the entertainment industry.

Ending & Moral: The original concludes with Pinocchio’s redemption and Geppetto’s joy, reinforcing values of family and virtue. Jacobs ends on a cynical punch line—nepotistic casting in a soap opera—questioning whether any true lesson remains.
