Relationship to Reading and Writing

Since grade school, I always knew my passion for reading and writing. I remember always reading above grade level and looking forward in challenging myself with new books. The day I was introduced to the book "Of Mice and Men" by John Steinbeck, I realized how much I love reading. This book brought a whole new meaning when it came to reading. I was able to visualize and make sense of books. My favorites were also horror books like Goosebumps. In writing, I remember as a kid, reflecting my opinions of a book. I used to love sharing how I felt in my writing. Although, I never felt confident with my grammar and spelling, writing for me was a way to express my thoughts.

Influential Teacher

I would say the most influential people in my reading and writing have been my teachers. My mom had me at such a young age, she didn't get the chance to go to college. At 19 years old, she had me my siblings and was only able to receive a GED. My dad, who was born in Mexico, received a high education but didn't know how to speak English. My mom was able to help a little bit when I was young but she always encouraged me to ask my teachers for help. I could name you all the teachers who have taught me to become a better reader and writer but I'm only going to mention one that impacted me. Mrs. Bawja was my high school English teacher my senior year. She was the teacher who helped me believe that my writing had meaning. As a second language learner I didn't have confidence in my writing because I would confuse both languages. But Mrs. Bawja showed me the beauty of knowing to languages and tips in advancing in both. The encouragement and motivation she gave me as a second language is learner, is the impact I want to give my students in the future.

Influential Factors

I believe the influential factor that I have experienced over the years is there isn't a write or wrong answer when understanding a text. Over the years, I always believed that everyones perspective of a book should be the same. I always thought that someone else's opinion was write and mine was wrong. With little encouragement I was nervous to express my opinion when I would think critically. As I have gotten older this fear has slowly deterred. With the help of my teachers in the past, who both brought me up or down with my critical writing has helped me improve.

Life Event: Literacy Learning

After I graduated high school my main goal was to go to college and become Veterinarian. I wanted to help save sick animals and hope to have a cure in making them live longer. My mentality 10 years ago was different from now. I was 18 years old, lost and in love with animals. In my early twenties I would say life hit. Long story short my parents lost our home and separated all in the same year. As the oldest, I wanted to help my siblings graduate high school and attend college. I worked multiple jobs, quit school, and helped my brother and sister finish school. Although, this wasn't the best of times I gain something out it. I was able to experience the working life. They were the jobs that I didn't want to be stuck with the rest of my life. I slowly took part time classes at a junior college with a undeclared major. I was 23 years old not sure what I was passionate about. Until, I volunteered at a high school ESL class. These 10th graders that I got to tutor in reading and writing motivated me to become a teacher. Their passion for wanting to become something when they grow up inspired me. The eagerness they presented when Mr. Gomez taught them new vocabulary or a book showed me, how important a students education is even if they are learning a new language. The background of these students was heartbreaking because they come to a new country to create a better life for their family. Teaching these students the importance of literacy and helping them succeed is what encouraged me.
