This is the purpose of reading according to Wierman (2018).<br><br>Writing is supported because comprehension allows students spend additional time thinking and communicating through writing rather than through oral discussion (Emig, 1977)</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><br>Phonics is the predictable relationship between phonemic awareness (sounds) and the letters that represent the sounds (graphemes) <em>(</em>Wierman<em>, 2018).<br><br></em>Research based strategy:</div><ul><li>&nbsp;Interactive read-aloud</li></ul><div>(Anderson, 2009)</div><div><br>Phonics supports reading and writing because it connects the sounds students have been taught with the printed letter.&nbsp;<br><br>In this pillar, reading is supported when students learn to recognize letters and vocalize the corresponding sound.<br><br>Writing is supported when students are taught which letters make the sounds they would like to write.</div>]]></description>

This also includes the ability to hear, identify, manipulate, and substitute phonemes <br>(Wierman<em>, 2018).</em><br><br>Research based strategy:&nbsp;</div><ul><li>Teach spelling patterns</li><li>Teach word families</li></ul><div>(Anderson, 2009)</div><div><br>Reading and writing are supported through phonemic awareness because phonemes, the building blocks of words, are taught.<br><br>Students need the individual sounds before making the connection between sounds and letters which makes it possible for them to read and write.</div>]]></description>
