Studying biographies of social activists integrates well with teaching self-management skills. Through the exploration of real-life stories, struggles and successes, students can see the importance of understanding their own stories, struggles, and successes. They can also practice examining how they currently manage their own emotions, feelings, and behaviors. Students can learn how to effectively manage their feelings and emotions when faced with difficult life challenges — an important aspect of developing healthy self-management skills.

For this lesson, learning objectives include:

Identify one’s own strengths and limitations

Strengthen self-identity and self-management to improve self-efficacy

Demonstrate the ability to understand one’s own emotions, thoughts, and behaviors and how they influence behavior across contexts

Draw evidence from articles, and refer to details and real-life examples to support analysis, reflection, and opinions

Identify strategies to effectively manage emotions, thoughts, and behaviors when overcoming life challenges

To succeed in school, students need to be able to focus, control their emotions, and adjust to change.

Many students enter our classrooms with psychological and learning issues, ADHD, or even adverse childhood experiences and trauma that affect their executive functioning and ability to self-regulate. They do not have the tools they need to focus and pay attention, keep their emotions in check, adjust to change, or handle the frustration that is sometimes a part of interacting with others or learning something new.

This can make it very challenging to complete required tasks in the classroom. In order to make learning accessible to these students, teachers must first work on developing their self-regulation skills.
