While being as young as he is he pushes Gordie to pursue writing telling him how good he is. While Gordie speaks against this idea, Chris insists saying that it's his father talking. Chris also says that if his parents are too broken to watch out for him he will. 

Later they reach a bridge there is nowhere to get out of the way if a train crosses while they are crossing. Naturally they cross to make it to the body quicker. However while they are crossing Gordie notices that a train was suddenly coming. They all run and Gordie, and Vern have to jump down a decent distance so the train doesn't hit them. Each having their own roles in the group and character. Vern tells them how he overheard talks about a dead body being found, and how they left it. They all eventually decide to go to find it to become famous. Chris takes a bunch of stuff for supplies including a gun, and they all head out in search of the dead boy. They encounter a decently deep pool of water, although they don't realize how deep it is so they suddenly drop in. They mess around in it a bit before realizing the pool is infested with leeches. They begin peeling the leeches off of each other after rushing out of the water.

They think about turning back. As Chris, Vern, and Teddy fight about whether they should. At the same time as Ace and his group. Although Teddy, and Vern fold and leave Chris refuses to leave the body behind for them. Ace gets out his knife and approaches Chris fully ready to kill him. However Gordie fires a warning shot with the pistol Chris had brought. He points it at Ace and clearly shows him that he is not the only one fine with killing.
