What is OI

Osteogenesis imperfecta can also be referred to as brittle bone syndrome because of how weak the bones are for people who have this disorder. The reason for this is because of a dominant mutation in the type 1 collagen gene. Collagen is the body's main protein that helps strengthen bones. Without this protein, bones become very weak and can break very easily. In fact a person with OI can experience several hundred fractures in a lifetime for no apparent cause.

The prognosis for a person with OI can vary greatly depending on what type of OI they have and the severity of the symptoms. Respitory failure is the most common reason of death followed by accidental trauma. However, despite the numerous fractures, people with OI have become normal people of society. Children have gone to school, participated in sports and have become had succesful and productive lives.
