Odysseus' mentor in many conflicts like the Trojan War and The Cyclops was Athena "And now I pondered how to hurt him worst,
if but Athena granted what I prayed for. Circe, who at the beginning was going against Odysseus' was now helping him. Odysseus met Tiresias in Hades where he foretold his future "I see destruction for ship and crew. Though you survive alone, bereft of all companions, lost for years, under strange sail shall you come home, to find your own house filled with trouble: insolent men eating your livestock as they court your lady." (Homer 645) All this was to come true in the rest of the story.

The tests starts off in Sailing to Troy with the Battle of Cicones "the main force of Cicones. This was an army, trained to fight on horseback or, where the ground required, on foot." (Homer 52). The following test was of the Lotus Eaters, the inhabitants were peaceful and only wished to eat the lotus " but those who ate this honeyed plant, the Lotus, never cared to report, nor to return: they longed to stay forever" (Homer 88). The third test was the Cyclops, son of Poseidon "The Cyclops Polyphemus returns to his cave, where Odysseus and his men are imprisoned." (Homer). Odysseus upheld the value of intelligence when he had come up with the idea of taking The Cyclops vision then hiding under his sheep to get out of the cave.

After being cast out by Aeolus they sail for 7 days they arrive to the land of the Laestrygonians, which was a race of cannibals. They had destroyed all the ships except the one Odysseus was in, "These creatures destroy all of Odysseus’ ships except the one he is sailing in" (Homer). After his crew had been reduced greatly his remaining men sailed to Aeae, where Circe transforms half of his men into pigs "She transforms half of the men into swine. Protected by a magic herb, Odysseus demands that Circe change his men back into human form" (Homer). They tied me up" the god Helios had also helped out with giving Odysseus sunlight that softened the wax that he would place in his mens ears. While sailing, Odysseus and his men encounter Scylla and Charybdis "Scylla to port and on our starboard beam Charybdis, dire gorge" (Homer 780)With Scylla and Charybdis it was a lose-lose situation, Odysseus had chosen to sail closer to Scylla where he would only lose 6 men. Odysseus had been held by Calypso for 10 years under a spell "though I have been detained long by Calypso" (Homer 29)despite being with her for 10 years he had never given consent to what had happened so to him he was still loyal.
