Fall of the Soviet Union and Putin’s Rise to Presidency - 1991

In 1991, the Soviet Union fell creating many challenges for many parts of the world. Tensions between Russia and the United States continued to grow. The Russian leader worried about the U.S. having more dominance in the world than Russia. This led to Russia strengthening their relations with China and India in an attempt to challenge the United States. After the Soviet Union disassembled, elections were coming, and the current president of Russia, Yeltsin, was trying to end the First Chechen War. President Yeltsin struggled to end the war as it continued to rage; he resigned his presidency and named Vladimir Putin as acting president. In 1990, Vladimir Putin had retired from the Committee for State Security after 15 years of service. Then retiring Putin moved to Moscow in 1996 where he joined the presidential staff and it wasn’t until 1999 were he was appointed to acting president.

Nevermind by Nirvana - 1991

Released in 1991, Nevermind brought grunge music into the mainstream. The single “Smells Like Teen Spirit” became a youth anthem and changed rock music. The album knocked Michael Jackson off the #1 spot on the Billboard charts. It sold over 30 million copies and made Nirvana a voice of their generation.

Micheal Jordan Brings the Bulls to the Championship - 1991

After coming back from retirement, Michael Jordan led the Chicago Bulls to three straight NBA championships. This was his second “three-peat,” meaning he had already done it once before. It showed how dominant he was and made the Bulls one of the most legendary teams ever. Jordan became an even bigger sports icon because of this.

Slap bracelets were metal bands wrapped in colorful fabric that would snap onto your wrist when you hit them against it. They were super fun and came in tons of designs like neon colors, animal prints, or glitter. A lot of schools banned them after a while because the metal inside sometimes poked through. Still, they were everywhere for a while and everyone traded them with friends.

The International Space Station Project - 1993

In 1993 the United States and Russia agreed to merge space programs. Eventually, The European Space Agency and Japan also put in effort to help the space exploration that the United States and Russia were trying to achieve. The United States and Russia succeeded in their project, and in 1998 they sent a spacecraft into space to assembly. The goal of the space program was to expand space exploration.

The Internet - 1993

Starting in the 1990s, businesses and individuals began using a worldwide networking system of linked computers which became known as the internet. The internet was created in the 1960s, but truly became popular during the mid and late 1990s. The most popular way to use the internet throughout the 1990s was the dial. Along with this new form of communication in the 90s there was an emergence of web browsers.

Titanic - 1997

The Titanic, directed by James Cameron, is a movie that follows two fictional lovers set against the infamous sinking of the real Titanic. The film became a huge success in the 1990s known for its groundbreaking special effects, emotional scenes, and big actors like Leonardo DiCaprio, and Kate Winslet. The Titanic became the box office highest-grossing film of the time. It also went on to win 11 Academy Awards and definitely had a presence during the 1990s.

Jurassic Park - 1993

Jurassic Park, directed by Steven Spielberg is a science fiction adventure film where a theme park genetically resurrected dinosaurs and opens to the public. It was groundbreaking for visual effects of the time and introducing CGI to the time. The film became so popular that it ended up grossing 1 billion dollars and holds the title of the high-grossing film of the time until the Titanic was created. With its thrilling action, likeable characters, and great visual effects Jurassic Park is definitely a memorable and famous movie from the 1990s.

The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill by Lauryn Hill - 1998

Lauryn Hill’s debut solo album came out in 1998 and mixed hip hop, soul, and R&B. It debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and sold over 422,000 copies in the first week. She won five Grammys for it, including Album of the Year—the first time a hip hop album did that. The album talks about love, motherhood, and identity in a real and personal way.

Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace follows the rise of Anakin Skywalker and the fall of the Galactic Republic. The film’s release was a massive cultural event in the 90s as the movie had groundbreaking visual effects and action-packed duels. Although the movie had mixed reviews from critics, it ended up being a box office hit, earning 1 billion dollars worldwide.
