Reflection for Job Interview (Mock Interview)

Did I feel nervous? How did I show or hide it?

For the job interview, I did feel nervous as I was put on the spot with little time to practice to rehearse. It was visible that I was nervous as I kept smiling in the video. I tried hiding my nervousness by making eye contact with the interviewer and trying my best to speak clearly and concisely.

Did I feel prepared for the interview? Why or why not?

I felt pretty much prepared for the interview as I had previously made some notes for myself to refer back to but could not see them during the interview. I sort of thought that I would just think of something to say for the things I didn't write notes for.

Did I use eye contact with the interviewer?

Regarding communication, I thought that I made good eye contact with the interviewer but seemed to drift off at times.

In what ways did I adapt my answers to highlight the skills and qualities most relevant to the role, rather than just listing achievements?

The way that I adapted my answers to highlight the skills and qualities most relevant to the role was to bring up past experience and listing commitments rather than individual achievements such as playing soccer as a team and therefore working well with others.

What impact did my non-verbal communication (e.g., eye contact, posture, gestures) have on how my answers were received?

I thought my eye contact and posture had a positive impact on how my answers were received though I do think my posture could have been in a more confident stance in order to show my assertiveness for the position of a farmer.

If I could repeat the interview, what would I change in how I presented myself, and why?

If I could repeat the interview, I would firstly stop smiling and take it more seriously as in a real interview that would be a big red flag. I would also make sure that I am maintaining eye contact throughout the entire interview to ensure that I would be getting my message across. I would also fix my posture in order to show my assertiveness for the position of a farmer. I can also do things like prepare before hand with practice questions to make sure that I am not getting stuck on anything.

Interviewing Skills Reflection

- How effective were your interview questions in achieving your purpose?

I would say that my interview was successful in achieving my purpose as my purpose make the person I was interviewing a bit uncomfortable and awkward. E.g. When I asked Kyle why he didn't get into a volleyball team, he got quite nervous and wasn't quite sure what to say for a moment. For the audience, this was humorous as it was clear that I was trying to make an awkward environment and that Kyle was a bit uncomfortable.

- How did your verbal communication contribute to the overall tone and flow of the interview?

The main thing that worked well was the difficult to answer questions like the first two. When the questions were asked it instantly changed the environment to something that was a bit awkward and silly. When Asking the questions I tried to keep my tone quite flat to make myself seem more serious in asking the question. My intent was to create a humorous effect as I was asking a rude question in such a serious manner. The one thing I reckon I could improve would be smiling throughout the interview. If I didn't smile or laugh at all the humorous effect for the audience would have been way better and I would have been more successful.

- What role did non-verbal communication play during your interview?

Non verbal communication played well in my interview as I thought I was able to maintain eye contact throughout most of the interview. Showing eye contact is important as it makes it more effective at getting my message or question across. Eye contact aligned with my purpose as it helped the audience see that I had a humorous intent.

- How would you refine your approach for future interviews?

My strengths I think was the eye contact and the flat tone I used to ask the questions. Two adjustments I would make for this interview would be to keep my body language flat and serious the whole time and to find more curveball questions to ask to add to the humorous effect. I think it would also be good to create follow up questions to add more to the natural flow of conversation. If I where to perform follow up questions, it would add to the total dryness and seriousness much more.

Next time, I think that it would be very beneficial to have a range of follow up questions depending on the answer of the person I'm interviewing. This would ensure that I keep on bouncing back with more difficult questions meaning that the person I'm interviewing wouldn't be given much time to think of a good answer. This is good because an awkward silence and a nervous appearance would add much more of a humorous effect.
