At the center of our solar system is our very own star, the Sun. It's so massive you could fit about 1.3 million Earths inside it! The Sun provides the light and heat that makes life possible on Earth. It is made up of a bunch of hot gas and fire all compacted together into a ball. You can see parts of the sun's fiery exterior exploding out.

The Smallest Planet

Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the smallest planet in our solar system. Mercury experiences extreme temperatures - it can be as hot as 800°F during the day and as cold as -290°F at night!

Earth's Twin?

Venus is often called Earth's twin because they're similar in size. Don't let the size fool you, Venus is actually very different from Earth. It has a thick atmosphere of carbon dioxide which makes it the hottest planet in our solar system. It also rotates backward compared to most other planets. Many people call Venus the planet of Love.

Our Home Planet

Earth is the only planet we know of that supports life. It has liquid water on its surface, a breathable atmosphere, and a magnetic field that protects us from harmful UV rays coming from the sun. The Earth is roughly 4.5 billion years old and is the third planet from the Sun.

The Red Planet

Mars is often called the Red Planet because of its reddish appearance. This is caused by iron oxide (rust) on its surface. Scientists are very interested in Mars because there's evidence it once had liquid water on its surface! Even though it looks hot it is actually quite the opposite. The average temperature is -80 degrees Fahrenheit.

The Giant Planet

Jupiter is the largest planet in our solar system - so big that all other planets could fit inside it! The big red spot at the bottom is a giant storm that's been raging for at least 400 years. Jupiter has at least 79 moons, including Europa, which scientists think might be capable of harboring life. Jupiter is made completely out of gas so it is referred to as a gas giant.

The Ringed Beauty

Saturn is everyone's favorite when we look through our telescope! Its beautiful rings are made mostly of ice and rock. Although other planets have rings, Saturn's are by far the most spectacular. Saturn is also a gas giant, and it is so light that if you put it in a pool of water it would float.

The Sideways Planet

Uranus is unique because it rotates on its side! This means its seasons are extreme - 42 years of constant sunlight followed by 42 years of darkness. It also has a beautiful blue-green color caused by methane in its atmosphere. Like Saturn, it has rings, but they are much smaller

The Windy World

Neptune is the last planet in our solar system and the windiest! Winds on Neptune can reach speeds of 1,200 miles per hour. Like Uranus, it has a beautiful blue color from methane in its atmosphere. Neptune has 14 known moons, including Triton, which orbits backwards compared to most other moons!
