Outline the characters that represent this theme?

Empathy in The Merchant of Venice is a key theme that is represented through several different characters to help convey deeper messages. In the court scene of the movie, Portia who is disguised as a judge shows empathy towards Shylock the Jew. It is clear that Shylock realizes and appreciates this empathy from Portia for understanding his situation when he replies with "Good and honest Judge". Another character who shows empathy is Salarino. In the opening scene of the play Antonio is going through mental torment about losing his ships and wealth at sea. Salarino then shows empathy towards Antonio in understanding his situation which is seen from quotes such as "My wind cooling broth" which further exaggerates how even the smallest thing makes Antonio worry.
Tom Harper
