Kerry Gallagher discusses how technology can be used to change the way we teach.

This made me contemplate how we can use these technologies to further support inquiry learning to drive student questioning and learning further. She advocates that students using technology can ignite their enthusiasm for learning. This is a key consideration for inquiry learning as student curiosity and intrinsic motivation play a major component of this teaching pedagogy.

Although this image is designed for the TELSTAR inquiry model, a number of these resources could be applied to other inquiry learning models as well to support student learning.

This image would be beneficial for teachers who wanted to use iPad technology in their classroom and help them decide apps they could use for each stage of the inquiry cycle. However, it may have been more beneficial if this image provided a short summary of the app and also the suited age range.

Owens, Hester and Teale (2002) advocate that technology provides opportunities for accessing information and promoting significant learning amongst students. They note that technology may not be a magical solution for academic improvement but it does have the possibility to motivate and maintain student interest. They argue that using technology with inquiry learning can assist students to push the boundaries of traditional school teaching and learning.

This article was particularly interesting as the authors were advocating how technology use can extend inquiry learning. This is as students have opportunities to access resources they may have been able to previously access such as experts, videos, blogs and other reading material. I found this article was relevant to the overarching research question as they do not advocate technology as the be all and end all, but as a resource that can support students' inquiry journey. I think it was also important that they identified problems they may arise as well, knowing that technology tools are not perfect nor is the information that students will access.

This website lists a number of accessible web tools that align with the different stages of the Guided Inquiry Design and NSW Department of Education's steps of the information process. Similar to the iPad Apps image, this website sorts the resources into stages of the inquiry cycle with a brief description of the web tool.

This is beneficial as educators can make a decision as to whether it is appropriate before accessing the web tools. It could be of some benefit if the target age was listed with the resources as well.

The author has provided an image, description of how to use the resources.

This resources is useful as teachers have freedom to consider how they could utilise these technologies for inquiry learning in the classroom. However, as this page is dated over two years ago it is possible that a number of new apps and web tools are now available for use. This type of tool may be more beneficial as a Pinterest board or Padlet where the author could continue to add resources over time.

Applying Technology to Inquiry-Based Learning in Early Childhood Education

This article supports the overarching question that was researched as Wang, Kinzie and McGuire (2010) explore the use of technology in early childhood classrooms. They argue that the use of technology can extend the range of inquiry learning that occurs. They also explore how technology can enhance interest and motivation, increase access to information and support cognitive and metacognitive processes.

This research extended my understanding of my overarching question as it explored how students can use technology to support inquiry learning. Although it is based on early learning settings, much of the information is also applicable to primary classrooms as well. Their article also discusses challenges as well, which is important as it shows that the authors value that they are critical of their own research as well.

Approaches of Inquiry Learning With Multimedia Resources in Primary Classrooms

This study by So and Kong (2007) compared a teacher who taught two classes using two different pedagogical approaches (direct instruction and inquiry learning) with multimedia technology to support learning.

This was a very interesting read as the teacher's response to using inquiry learning was that they did not think students would learn the same amount of content if they were not taught using direct instruction. Their findings identified students were engaged using the technologies to support their inquiry learning, however they did require more time for this than if they had been taught directly by the teacher. This article advocates that students in primary can use technology to support inquiry learning where it promotes further independence and access to information.

Hakverdi-Can and Sönmez's (2012) article explores how pre-service teachers worked together to create an inquiry-based learning environment to be used for Science. These authors also advocate the use of technology to support inquiry learning for Science as it allows students to experience scientific modelling and use real data in their investigations. They also identify that time and teachers' proficiencies act as barriers to integrating technology with inquiry learning. Therefore, their focus is on improving skills of pre-service teachers to create such an environment for learning.

I found this article important to my research, as it advocates technology support for inquiry learning yet also identifies teachers as potential barriers. This is important to identify as teachers will be the facilitators and to support inquiry learning with technology they also need skills with using these technologies.
