Several key changes that have impacted my practice are the advances in biofeedback devices and wearable technology. One example: using catheters into the esophagus to monitor lung pressures and optimize ventilator settings to improve oxygenation and reduce lung damage. Another example is fitbit or other movement tracking device utilized in assessment of sleep/activity/cardiac status. Virtual care/telehealth is huge development that is changing patient access to care in remote areas as well as creating better communication tools for multi-disciplinary care teams. Simulation tools have even moved into virtual reality to improve training and practice for healthcare professionals. There are obviously other significant disease treatment advances and pharmaceutical advances that have occurred over the last 20yrs as well...too many to mention! Healthcare has seen tremendous growth as a result of technology advancements.

When I was a student in training, we had a solid didactic foundation, preceptorship in clinical rotation and learned strictly in lectures or at the bedside. I watched physicians practice the concept of "See one, do one, teach one" in their practice!! We utilized Behaviourism and Cognitivism learning styles primarily, with some Constructivism. However, not a lot of Connectivism occurred until later stages of my experience when we were asked to do research and be self-directed in our search for knowledge. Over the last 6-7 years we have been able to access webinars and eLearning sources to help professional development and further our practice. Any knowledge of Tech tools tends to be self-driven though...not provided by the employer.

The most important technology in web development was the advent of coding languages that allowed communication between a website and a database, where information could be stored. That meant that websites no longer needed to be static information, but could be programmed to receive information input by a user, as well as programmed to show different kinds of information, depending on various designated parameters. And, around 2000, Content Management Systems (CMS) were developed that provided non-techies with the ability to manage their own website content. This contributed to the explosion of blogging, and similar uses also allowed end-users to interact with social media sites, leading to the explosion called Web 2.0. Simply put, Web 1.0 was mainly seen as leading to a "New Economy" based on new ecommerce capabilities. That narrow-mindedness famously led to the Dot Com Bubble of 2002. Instead, Web 2.0 was founded on using the Internet for social interaction.

Web development is one industry that changes so fast that it's not possible for schools to keep pace. Anything learned in school is just an introduction, and hopefully enough of a foundation to allow one to continue learning on their own. Many of the programmers that I've known, did not learn what they know in school. They mostly taught themselves. The most handy tool for that kind of learning is a Google search. Most helpful is learning from other experienced programmers, and make sure to keep up-to-date on the latest development by reading literature online. I think most developers do not see schools as the source for their learning, but accept that it's going to be a continual process.

The predominant technology changes over the past 20 years in the Crane Industry is an advance of Load Moment Indicators (LMIs) they are computer hardware /software that determine capacities for selected configuration of the machine. These started out as a simply warning an operator when approaching capacity to the multi featured machine specific modern variants. A crane now requires a complex understanding of the manufactures software language. Early models the operator had to input the configuration and the machine would happily let you crash I this was done in error. Modern Can bus based electrical systems have multiple modes that communicate with each other all parameters of the operation. They record data much like flight data recorders and are available for forensic examination should an incident happen. Manufactures, insurance companies, OHS, and owners all have a vested interest in the data. LMIs are now integral to operating the machine and if malfunctioning shut it down (normally at the most inconvenient time). Mechanics and operators today spend a lot of time diagnosing faults with computerized tools and it has significantly altered the training requirements. Technical reading skills and advanced computer literacy is now a foundation skill. Transferring from one machine type to another has a considerable risk attached and requires acquiring a new skill set.

The last 20 years resemble its beginnings found in the various craft guilds of the middle ages. Apprentices were indentured to a master (Journeyman) and would travel place to place learning and applying their trade.

The modern version is supervision by a journeyman mentor on the job and attending block or blended release technical training each year. The formal training normally at a polytechnic or union training facility. Each year successfully completed advances the apprentice through until completion.

In the Fisheries Sector there have been a shift in the way Ministries communicate both locally regionally with regards to the collection of data, before only specific data was collected on paper and stored. Now with the implementation of a Database the Division can now collect vast amount data (biological, catch and effort ) where it can be easily accessed by all parties involved and analyzed.

ICT Support Education:
In my 'neck of the woods' technology is somewhat new with regards to incorporating it in learning. Before students only had the library as their only form of getting information or their teachers. Now Technology has been integrated into the curriculum so as to better enhance the different modes of learning. Also laptop initiatives were introduced and distributed to student so that they can have access to different resources. Public businesses within different communities were equipped with internet access to provide free WiFi so students who did not have internet access can now connect and complete/do assignments/research.

We still practice traditional modes of learning such as standard lectures, assignments and group work/discussions. Many lecturers try to incorporate different tools to enhance learning but are limited due to lack of resources available. Recently e learning has been introduced and it is still a work in progress, as it is new to many but it is one step closer in to helping to bridge the gaps of learning and technology, making it more interesting.

In the higher education sector, technology has begun to take a stronger role with 'distance education' shifting into what we know as 'online education' today. The shift toward a paperless classroom has helped to ease students and faculty in using an LMS which is for the most part required. Faculty Development Centers have become more focused on supporting the transition of teaching from a F2F to an online environment.

Continuing education (CE) departments in the States, for the most part, have followed this trend. However this varies depending upon available funding and existing infrastructure. In terms of the business operational side of CE, many departments are struggling to update their technology and are often still using outdated databases and lack access to new technology to support administrative functions. Online collaboration tools are slowly being introduced to enhance workflow and communication, but it can be slow and not consistent..

There hasn't been much change in learning and education models that I have seen in the more formal side of the CE sector. Although there is an emphasis on applied learning, many professors and instructors still use a 'lecture" style to teach. However, this may vary depending upon the context and style of the instructor.

The shift I have seen is in the adoption of online packaged learning courses/programs that are vendor developed and marketed through CE departments who cannot afford to develop or transition their own programs to an online format. Industry experts are assigned to teach these courses by the vendor, but the content is standardized.

In the culinary industry there have been relatively few technology changes. Perhaps there have been small advances in equipment, but overall the changes have been small. I would say the biggest change has been the introduction of social media. It has allowed an immediate connection with our customers and other chefs around the globe. It has opened up the world in ways that have never been open before. The ability to see what is happening in real time, trends move faster and Instagram is king. It has changed our industry in that some chefs are creating a dish based on his photographability and not on the flavour profile in the hope that the post will go viral. Food has always been beautiful, but there is a new crop of chefs that started as architects and designers. They are bringing a new element to food that did not exist 20 years ago.

The structure of Culinary education remains mostly unchanged from when I attended school. The system of ‘expert’ demonstration and student repetition is not a model that can be easily re-created. There have been many on-line tutorials. (Just scroll through Facebook for 5 minutes) However the ability to learn from an expert in real time and to ask questions and listen to tips and tricks learned from years of experience remain unchanged. A lot of the food business is about feeling and tasting and every time you make an item the amounts of each ingredient needs to change based on the sweetness of a fruit or the moisture in a dough. This only comes from in person experience and is likely the reason why the system remains relatively unchanged.

As a person who works in the technology field, I have been lucky enough to be at the forefront of the changes. In the field of web development, advancements have been made to what we are able to develop with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. With these advancements, it is now a requirement to develop for more than just one device type. Developers must keep in mind how the application or website will look on a smartwatch, smartphone, tablet and laptop/desktop computer.

The applications that can be used to develop websites are now more powerful too, with many shortcuts and add-ons to improve productivity and file management. Content Management Systems with functionality that used to cost tens of thousands of dollars a month are now free, thanks to applications such as WordPress, Joomla and Drupal.

One of the benefits of working in a field that is constantly evolving is that a person will not get bored in their role. To be successful, you must constantly stay up-to-date and learn new things.
