“I wake up. Immediately I have to figure out who I am” (1)

Although it is just the first two sentence of the book, the quote speaks volumes. My first impression is that it’s a really good introduction to the story since it intrigues me enough to keep flipping the pages. At second glance, I found myself relating to the words. Obviously, I don’t relate to it in a literal way, but I could see the connection between A and me. My awakening could be the snap back to reality from the dream that is childhood. As a high school student with no dreams or goals for the future, I feel pressured to find the path to follow and to figure out who exactly I am.

“It would be too easy to say that I feel invisible. Instead, I feel painfully visible, and entirely ignored. People talk to her, but it feels like they are outside a house, talking through the walls” (122)

When A woke up in Kelsea’s body one day, and felt what it is like to be her. The feeling of loneliness is described very clearly through the house analogy. A feels connected to Kelsea because they share this similar feeling of isolation. The quote is important to the overall story because A indirectly admits the loneliness that comes with the curse of switching bodies on the daily without the ability to stop.

“This is what love does: It makes you want to rewrite the world. It makes you want to choose the characters, build the scenery, guide the plot. The person you love sits across from you, and you want to do everything in your power to make it possible, endlessly possible. And when it’s just the two of you, alone in a room, you can pretend that this is how it is, this is how it will be” (175)

When A fell for Rhiannon, A realizes what love is. Sure, A had experienced love before through different people A took over , but this is first time when A him/her/it-self has experienced love. I find myself agreeing to this feeling because of my daydreaming habits. I would dream about meeting either my favorite K-Pop star or favorite Korean Drama actor in real life and fall in love. Like A, I pretend that my dreams are or will be reality.

～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～~ Personal Review! ~～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～～

In my opinion, Every Day by David Levithan is overall a really interesting read. In the original book, narrated by the genderless soul named "A" who is forced to change human hosts daily, A tells about "living" his life with his curse. A finds his/her/it's first and most likely only love, Rhiannon, and tries to stay by her side. My favorite part of this novel is the small scattered stories from each body A takes over that contributes and combines into one story. The book combines the plot with a lot of thoughtful quotes (like the ones on the right). The quotes makes the book seem more meaningful and not just another sappy romance novel. Even though this novel has its differences that separates it from the other romantic stories, it also has its unrealistic side. As realistic as a fiction novel story could be, Levithan could've written the story a bit more believable. Instead of imagining how A got to be what A is, Levithan could've added more of a backstory to help make the story more believable. The only consistency A has ever known is the curse that forces A to change bodies every day but the bodies didn't have to always be conveniently around area and age as Rhiannon. His one true love, Rhiannon. Why her though? Is it because she's a sad girl who just wanted to go to the ocean? Or is it because of the cliche, she's my one true love/ soul mate? Unless the reader is a firm believer of "love at first sight," the whole situation of falling in love with someone in the first five minutes just does not seem realistic at all. But since A is on a time crunch, the only way Levithan is going to make A fall in love is by using the "love at first sight" tactic. The main thing that upsets me about the book is the lack of the explanation to the paranormal curse, but Every Day is a very compelling as well as fascinating book overall.

“If you stare at the center of the universe, there is a coldness there. A blankness. Ultimately, the universe doesn’t care about us. Time doesn’t care about us. That’s why we have to care about each other.” (320)

Nearing the end of the book, A and Rhiannon have one last moment together before A leaves her alone forever. Each day they're together, the time they have is like a ticking time bomb that would blast A into another body. I've always knew that nobody is the center of the universe, but I have never really thought about it until this quote. Whether I have a project due tomorrow or a holiday break is coming to an end, time will not slow down. No one has the ability to stop or slow time. The next day would inevitably appear whether it is wanted or not.
