Windows and Doors by Alicia Scott

Consider the students in your classroom and books that would lend themselves as windows or mirrors. In other words, what books can your students identify with or see themselves represented in some way through the narrative (mirrors)? And what books offer views of worlds other than those of your students that allow them to learn from different experiences (windows)? Post a link on Padlet to share at least one book along with a short annotation. The link can be to the book (on a website such as Amazon) and/or a book trailer.

This story has to do with migration for work of Hispanic families and is a mirror of what many students go through within our school. Many of the families that come to our school are here because work has brought their families to Greenville. It is also the reason that we have such a transient population when that work is no longer available.

https://www.amazon.com/Pancho-Rabbit-Coyote-Mexican-American-Childrens/dp/1419705830/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1518619781&sr=8-1&keywords=pancho+rabbit+and+the+coyote

The book that I think is a mirror for my students is When I was Young In the Mountains by Cynthia Rylant. In this story a little girl describes her life living in the mountains. I taught at Slater-Marietta. I would describe Slater as the first school in Appalachia. Many students actually come into town from the mountains to attend school. This book is obviously set in the past, but there are still many things mentioned in this story that my students can relate to; for example walking through cow pastures, swimming in watering holes, seeing snakes, shelling beans, etc. In this story the little girl says she never wants to go the beach or the desert because she loves her home in the mountains. That is how many people in the Marietta community feel about the mountainous area they live in.

Night by Elie Wiesel is a book about a teen who is a prisoner in the holocaust. He suffers abuse by his captors, starvation, and dehumanization. I think that this book gives a glimpse into a world that most of our students have not experienced.

Tar Beach by Faith Ringgold
This story is about a young girl up in Harlem growing up in Harlem. She dreams about flying whenever she wants as of way of being free. The families spend a lot of time on the roof top of a building which they called Tar Beach. It was kind of like a place to go where they went to relax, talk, eat, and play games instead of thinking about the troubles of the world. Students always dream about just being free and doing what they want to do inspite of not having the means. So the families create ways to wash the troubles away and just have fun only if it is just for a little while.

So she panics and with the help of her 3 cousins eat 24 tamales just to find out that her mother had the ring all along. Tamales are meat cooked in maiz and wrapped in corn husk. It's a big part of Hispanic culture especially in Mexico. I see this as a book that my students can identify with because it displays both the food and family culture surrounding their lives. Tamales are a common food in the Hispanic cultural (esp. around Christmas time) and so is family unity!

https://www.amazon.com/Too-Many-Tamales-Gary-Soto/dp/0698114124

This book is about three African American youths who grew up on the streets of Newark, New Jersey. The story follows them from youths to adults. The reader is privy to their failures, both in and out of school, their brushes with the law, and their families' dis-function. All three boys, against all odds, finish high school and go on to attend college and then medical school. They created a friendship pact and kept each other accountable, and that is how they achieved their success. Now, these three men speak to teenagers and encourage them to create friendship pacts and help one another reach their goals. My students really enjoyed this book and we did a variety of extension activities with the friendship pact idea.

The Watson's go to Birmingham by Christopher Paul Curtis is a truly inspiring story that I love to read to my students. The story focuses on the life of a young boy in the 4th grade, who lives in Flint, Michigan with his parents and siblings. This story focuses on bullying, life, poverty, death, and segregation during the 1960's. This book is written from the prospective of the young boy, so my students can really relate to it and absolutely love this story.
