She grew up in new jersey and attended Swarthmore college and then moved to England where she began pushing for women’s rights. It was when she moved back to America in 1910 that she became a leader in the suffragette movement. She worked on this for years and eventually her and Lucy Burns formed the National Woman’s Party. Then in later years she advocated the passage of an Equal rights Amendment also. This protest mark made quite the statement with ten brass bands, 26 floats of suffragists all dressed in various costumes, five mounted patrols, and over 8000 marking women from all social classes. (3)    
 
As expected the parades experienced much abuse both physical and verbal from the onlookers at the parade but the police were very reluctant to stop and of this and some of the women suffered severe injuries. The lack of protection from the police related in a huge scandal which resulted in the suffragettes getting an impressive amount of publicity. Later Alice Paul and the other women were arrested repeatedly for their daily demonstrations of bearing placards in front of the White House. Alice Paul was arrested seven times and jail three for demonstrating her support in women’s rights. Even when she was in jailed she continued her protests with hunger strikes. (2)    
 
As stated above the suffragettes suffered from many experiences of violence but what makes them and Alice Paul ‘truly radical’ is the fact that they didn’t fight back nor did they cause any harm to anyone but themselves in their protests. (1)

She was willing to work hard for what she wanted but didn’t want to cause any harm on others. This proves that she was truly radical as opposed to a radical extremist. Radical extremists are very closeminded and don’t think about anyone else they are very focused on themselves and what it is they want. Alice Paul however was able to acknowledge the opposing side of the argument and was willing to take the time to make a reasonable argument.  “I think if we get freedom for women, then they are probably going to do a lot of things that I wish they wouldn't do; but it seems to me that isn't our business to say what they should do with it. It is our business to see that they get it.”

The men of the world at this time were very threatened by this because they had no fair reason it was just how it had always been. Alice Paul obviously valued equality and couldn’t understand why she wasn’t even allowed to discuss this with people. She was able to work hard for what she wanted without harming anyone. Sure she broke some laws and was physically and verbally abused but her protests didn’t harm anyone outside of the protests. Her great courage is also so inspiring. To be able to do all of these things when half of the country is against you take a lot of guts. She is an incredible woman who did so much for the world we live in now. It is incredible to know that someone who is just one person just like all of us is able to make such a big impact on the world.
