Refugee students are children who have been forced to flee their native countries due to war, persecution, human rights abuses, and more. They often face unique challenges in their host countries, including language barriers, cultural differences, and emotional trauma. Additionally, many may face traumatic health issues (both psychological and/or physical). For example, students from Ukraine, Palestine, and Sudan (three of the many wars that are sadly occurring) may have physical issues they may need help adjusting towards such as a missing limb.

Refugee students are often targets of bullying and discrimination due to their different backgrounds. Schools must take proactive measures to create inclusive and safe environments for all students. In California, Seth's Law is a newly enacted law that stipulates school policies on bullying and harassment, along with instructions on how to create a formal complaint, are easily accessible to everyone. Educators should make sure that refugee students are aware of this process.
