Teachers that I didn’t like I always thought I could out smart and barely squeak out an A in their class, but I never worked any harder than I had to. My junior year I was in a GT AP history/ English double block class. Based off of my initial scores at the beginning of the year, my teacher asked me to drop the class and opt for a easier class. But I decided to stick with it and work my butt off. Later that year, that teacher took me aside and apologized to me. The first time a teacher had ever apologized to me for not seeing my potential. I had never felt so seen. There’s kids who don’t have the same chance at things as others and I want to give them that chance. I had a little boy last year who came from a home where neither parents cared for him. They willingly gave him to the grandparents. The mother was on drugs and it had such an impact on him. He challenged me in many ways. From frustration to pure love for this child. Now that I look back at my year with him I know that is exactly why I’m in this profession, I want to be that light and guiding figure for children. He is someone I will always check on. I had one student on my radar and had heard from many teachers that he was trouble. His dad was in prison and he was the Apple of mom’s eye, so she said. She had left him with the grandparents because she couldn’t handle him. By the second week of school, I was out of tools and decided that he just needed to sit away from the rest of the class. I went to go get a desk from the storage room to put him in the corner. I found a desk and pulled it away from the wall when I noticed a hole in the wall. Memories flooded of me putting that hole in the wall when I was put in the corner. I remember thinking I was going to dig my way out! It was as that moment that I knew I had to form a relationship with him. I attended his football games and built a friendship with grandpa. He became a leader for me and worked harder than anyone else. My father is a Marine in the United States Marine Corp and my mother worked in law enforcement for 23 years. They have instilled in me the importance of helping people with your own set of skills. My parents believe if you’re not helping someone in need then you’re not doing your job as a member of society. That is something that I believe to be true. I have a gift for working with children and I never imagined myself in the education system but I’m glad to be here because I believe it’s my contribution to the future.
