         <description><![CDATA[<div>  Q-ships were submarine decoy ships<br>'In 1914 the submarine was a new weapon, yet to show its potential.  This was considered by many to be somewhat dastardly and in 1901, the British Third Sea Lord and Controller of the Navy, Rear Admiral Sir Arthur Wilson VC, had suggested that submarines should treated as pirates in wartime and that the crews should be hanged. <em><br></em> the men remaining on board to man the guns had to endure accurate shell-fire<br> During 1915 – 1917 the number of these ships service increased to a peak of 49 in 1917, with the last being commissioned in mid-1918, a total of about 100. '<br> </div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>At first, Germans created the U-boat (what Lily has been doing) in 1913,<br>'The first <a href="http://spartacus-educational.com/FWWnavy.htm">Royal Navy</a> submarine was developed by John P. Holland and was launched in 1902' <br>The war was very intense, 'Germany had 10 U-boats (17 more under construction). The German Navy also had 30 petrol-powered submarines. Britain had 55 submarines and the French had 77.'<br>'Submarines during the war had four <a href="http://spartacus-educational.com/FWWtorpedo.htm">torpedo</a> tubes in the bow and one or two in the stern, with 16 cm guns and mine-laying equipment.'</div><div><br></div><div>&nbsp;'Britain lost 54 submarines but by 1918 had 137 in service with another 78 submarines. The German Navy had 134  <a href="http://spartacus-educational.com/FWWuboat.htm">U-boats</a> and these managed to sink 192 boats, killing more than 5,400 people.'</div>]]></description>
