When Montag is caught by Beatty and forced to light aflame to his own house, he is insulted and shamed by Beatty. Beatty wants to know why Montag had a passion for literature, due to the fact he lacked the interest just like everyone else. Beatty verbally provokes Montag as well as strikes him on the head, punishing him for his pursuit in books despite the ban. The characters surrounding Montag lack the knowledge of enjoying literature so they insult and pick on him.

The theme of being rejected by society as an outcast occurs throughout Fahrenheit 451. Bradbury chose this theme to inform the auidence they do not have to conform to fit into society because your interest differ from those around you. Although the book was written in 1954, Bradbury's theme can still be taken into consideration today. The audience comes to realization after reading Fahrenheit 451, that society will treat you unfairly because your differences, good or bad.
