Ask family and friends

A great place to start is to see if any family and friends know of anyone that works in an area that interests you. Going on work experience with a family member or friend will mean they can take you there and back for the week so transport won't be an issue. This is also a good option if you still haven't found a career that interests you, because any work experience is still good work experience. You will still develop your skills in communication, confidence, using your initiative and much more.

Do a google search

If asking family and friends doesn't work, then use Google to search for employers near you in the area that interests you, for example, enter the following into google search 'construction employers near me', or whatever you're interested in. You might be surprised what comes up. Find the companies website and research what they do. Try to find an e-mail address and send them an e-mail explaining who you are, what you're looking for, the dates of work experience week and explain why you're interested in their company and the skills and qualities you have that the employer might appreciate ie I'm reliable and hardworking. If you don't hear back from them after a week, follow up with a phone call.

Making a phone call

No one likes making phone calls, but this is a brilliant life skill to develop, so be brave, push yourself out of your comfort zone. After a few phone calls you'll wonder why it bothered you so much. Before you call, prepare what you want to say, write this down along with key information like the dates of the work experience week. If the employer can't help you, don't take this personally, just thank them for their time.

Keep sending out e-mails until someone says yes. Don't wait to hear back from an employer before sending out another e-mail. You should be contacting at least 2 employers a week!

Spend some time reflecting on your experience, what you enjoyed and what you didn't. This is helping you learn more about yourself and what types of work you enjoy. Also think about the work skills you developed. These skills are essential for your future success in the world of work.

Have a look at this suggested time line plan to help you make a well informed decision about your post-16 options (this is what you plan to do after you leave school in Y11). If you don't understand anything ask an adult you trust to help you. Think about how you can implement this plan. Who do you need to talk to to make this happen? How can you make sure you stick to the plan? What reminders can you set up now to ensure you get organised?

Attending Open Events

Many of your local colleges are now having open events for Y10 students so that you can begin considering your options. At an open event you can look at the work current students do on their course. You need to consider if you would enjoy doing this work. There will be more open events in the Autumn term when you are in Y11, but there are many benefits to attending a college open event more than once. This will help you become familiar with the college and staff, which will give you greater confidence when you start. Visit other college websites to find out when their open events are (see below)!
