According to the National Library, an adventure novel “usually involves the main character going on a quest or journey and experiencing extreme conditions. The adventure may or may not involve history but has plenty of action. Some adventure fiction could also involve elements of mystery, dystopia or fantasy” (National Library). Adventure novels are fairly popular in the literature world, and I personally believe it is popular because of the other elements from other genres within it.

An example of a popular adventure novel is the book The Odyssey. Even though it is more so an epic, the main character Odysseus was put on a quest to return home after a war he had just fought in. In the ten years it took him to get back home, Odysseus had to fight a number of monsters and gods. Readers of this thrilling epic get to join in the life-threatening battles and struggles alongside him.

One of the earliest adventure books I remember reading was Magic Treehouse. Each book was written in a different setting, a different time period, and had a different plot to solve. The characters by the end of the book had learned new things and had applied it to their own lives.

Since I read those books, along with other adventure books, I've realized that two main elements in the adventure story genre are action and uneasy quests that bring forth challenges. Ultimately, the characters go through a significant change from the beginning of each story to the end.

Some adventure literature authors are: Mark Twain, J.K Rowling , C.S.

Dystopian Novels are a very interesting book genre. These types of books typically begin with a society or a culture that is seemingly perfect, but, in reality, it is quite the opposite. Additionally, according to April Spisak in her article "What Makes a Good YA Dystopian Novel?", there are four main elements that make a novel dystopian: the setting is explicitly described, characters in authority are in their positions for a reason, main characters' personalities are formed by the events and situations of their environment, and the conclusion is often filled with harsh ultimatums (Spisak).

One great example of a dystopian novel is The Giver. In this book the main character Jonas lives in a world where every person is the same. Once enlightened about his society, Jonas decides to take action. He then teaches other people about what he learned was being hidden from them by authorities, but no one believed him. In the end, Jonas was forced to take matters into his own hands and was faced with a harsh ultimatum.

Some examples of dystopian novel authors are: Ray Bradbury, Suzanne Collins, Scott Westerfeld

Sources:

Spisak, April. “What Makes a Good YA Dystopian Novel?” The Horn Book, 27 Apr. 2012, https://www.hbook.com/2012/04/choosing-books/recommended-books/what-makes-a-good-ya-dystopian-novel/.

“Where Does Jonas Live?
Historical Fiction

Historical fiction, in essence, is a genre of literature that takes place in a specific and real time period in the past but has characters that are fictional. The point of historical fiction is to put the reader in a time period that the book takes place in and to put them in the shoes of someone who lived during that event or time period. As Dalton stated in his article, "What is Historical Fiction?", "historical fiction is not meant for simply explaining facts about history like a typical high school social studies book might, but immerse the reader into the period and allow them to relive experiences during that time"(Dalton).

Cracker! The Best Dog in Vietnam was a historic fiction book that I've read that takes place in the Vietnam War. Cracker was a bomb-sniffing Vietnam War dog who had a handler named Rick. Throughout the book the bond between Rick and his dog grow stronger as they fight in the war together. The beauty of this story is that, though Rick and Cracker didn't actually exist in the Vietnam War, there were soldiers like Rick who had dogs similar to Cracker in the war. Not only that, but I feel that this story gives accurate insight on the soldiers' emotions in battle and overall, gives the reader a new perspective on those who wear a uniform. That perspective being: the people I read about in history books, those who have fought in wars, they were people who likely had families and who had emotions like me. Historical fiction has the power to drive out those kind of thoughts and feelings, which makes it such a beautiful genre.

Examples of historic literature authors:
Kate Alcott, Sebastian Barry, and Cynthia Kadohata.

Sources:

Dalton, H.
