Milwaukee Curfew during BLM marches

In the height of the coronavirus, last may and June especially, the BLM Movement was stronger than ever. Everyone was posting on social media, people were protesting in the streets, donating, and bringing awareness. However, the protests started to get violent or out of control so the City of Milwaukee created an 8pm curfew. While this did not apply in Whitefish Bay, my dad lives in Milwaukee and I was staying with him at the time. Even with the curfew, people still went out and protested every night down the streets outside of my house. Because they had gotten violent, we turned off all out lights and sat in the dark so people wouldn't think anyone was home and we backed our cars as far into the driveway as they went as to not get vandalized. While it was scary, I think that the protests were effective in getting attention from all over the world. This relates to Thoreau because people saw injustice in the government towards people of color and didn't stay silent. We protested, spoke up, and got people's attention to make a change and bring awareness to the realities of what was happening. By not following the curfew law, people showed that their passion for the movement and people being treated equally was more important than following the government's rules. While the protests in general may not be representative of Thoreau as they got violent, going against the curfew wasn't a violent action as if was defiance against the government. -Elizabeth King

Blacks participated in sit in where they went to "whites only" establishments, as a way of protesting Jim Crow laws of segregation. These sit-ins are connected to Thoreau because blacks were fed up with the horrible treatment they faced and Jim Crow laws and government at the time were apart of the unfair treatment . These sit-ins would often in violence or humiliation such as food being pored of thrown at them. Them boycotting and making their voices heard began a movement of change which is what Thoreau would have wanted. These acts of sit-ins were just the beginning for blacks and seeking rights but ignited the movement for change.

This example of civil disobedience is from Milwaukee native, Colin Kaepernick, and his peaceful kneeling during the national anthem. Kaepernick protested the issues of racial inequality, and police brutality. While Kaepernick isn't breaking the law, he is still protesting by kneeling during the anthem. This relates to Thoreau's philosophy of self reliance over societal institutions. In this case, Kaepernick's protest had a huge impact, both positively and negatively. Many people backed Kaepernick, specifically professional athletes. As Threau said in the quote above, "it requires you to be the agent of injustice to another, then I say, break the law." Furthermore, Kaepernick followed through, and protested for a good cause, that we can see is still going on today.

The Boston Tea Party was a protest to the tea taxes in America from England (taxation without representation). American people had dumped many crates of tea into the ocean. This event is connected to Thoreau because people were done with not having representation in the English Parliament. Therefore, they took it into their own hands to protest and make their voices heard. This civil disobedience was effective in a way because it eventually led to the American call for independence from England just a few years later.

In 2019 auto workers for General Motors walked out of their jobs in protest of unfair wages and working conditions. 48,000 United Automobile Workers from over 50 plants in the United States protested their employers, they wished to earn increased job security, gateway for temporary workers to become permanent, and better pay and retaining healthcare benefits. The protests were nonviolent and eventually led to better working conditions. The auto workers were directly protesting rules that they thought were unjust, hoping to amend them to be more fair. Instead of following the rules set out for them, the workers decided for themselves what was right or wrong and chose to do something about it. After a month of strike GM and the UAW agreed on a labor plan that would give them better working conditions, ending the strike. I think what made this protest so effective is that they were peaceful and each day they were not working, GM was losing massive amounts of money. This motivated them to make a relatively quick decision to come to a compromise.

Thousands of people gathered outside the White House on his first day of Presidency. This was caused by women coming forward and revealing the President's inappropriate sexual conduct. Here, the protests were non-violent. This resulted in more women speaking up for themselves and the push for more women to be found in office. An example of this is, "EMILY’s List and Planned Parenthood held workshops designed to encourage civic participation among women, including running for office." I think that this protest was effective, however more need to be done in order for there to be more equality. This connected to Thoreau because it shows how women did not stick to the stereotypes, and however stood up for themselves.

in June 2015, the supreme court legalized same-sex marriage in all states when they were not previously allowed to do so in some. This finally happed after lots of protesting and pushing to get the law through the supreme court. The fact that same sex marriages were not allowed in the first place was unjust and unlawful.

Singing Revolution Estonia(Kevin)

During World War II, the Soviet Union invaded the Baltic Nations of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. In Estonia, they overthrew the government and implemented their own laws and regulations. Among these was banning of Estonian cultural heritage going as far as even making Russian, the official language of the country. The Estonians decided to keep their culture alive by singing cultural songs, flying their national flag, and speaking their native language. Their was no violent action taken by the Estonians and in turn, the Soviets had no good reason to retaliate other than telling people off for singing. Eventually, Estonia got their freedom from the Soviet government. Similar situations happened in the other Baltic nations as well. The Estonians did not like the Soviet government that was governing them, so they decided to let them know by violating their policies. It was effective due to their nonviolence. This meant that the Russians couldn't take violent actions against them and just had to endure the singing.

March for Our Lives (Grace Reimers)

After the school shooting at the Stoneman Douglas High School, millions of people took action against gun reform. The Second Amendment is highly contested because it can be interpreted in many different ways. The members of the march hoped for it to be removed, despite the challenge of it being one of our founding principles. This is connected to Thoreau because he questions whether we "shall we endeavor to amend [laws]" and these marchers do just this. Although it did not change the Constitution, it brought great amounts of awareness to the subject.
