Jane Eyre: A Letter to my Sixteen Year Old Self

If you could write a letter to your 16 year old self, what would you say? In the classic novel, Jane Eyre, Jane is a governess who believes that her difficult childhood experiences will determine how the rest of her life will turn out. She believes that her adult years will be spent in misery, because that is how her childhood years were spent. So we asked many parents and grandparents to write a letter to give advice to their 16 year olds selves. Our hope was that they would be able to reassure their younger self that everything would eventually work out in life. This video shows their responses. Emma is representing her grandmother, Val. Emily is representing her grandmother, Kate. and Aleda is representing her mother, Lori.

Throughout the novel Jane Eyre, Jane is searching for a sense of belonging. While in multiple parts of her life she finds belonging in differing values, some of which being physical belonging, mental belonging, and ethical belonging, each of which plays a part in her life. Feeling like you physically belong may be when you are home, or in a physically comfortable environment. When you mentally belong, you may be with family and friends and be with good company. And ethically belonging is when you feel at peace with yourself, helping others, and doing good. So while Jane juggles each of these senses, it leads us all to ask, where do we belong?
-Caasi Smuin & Ryan Pickering

The book Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë, brings up social questions about love. We asked people some questions based off of the topics brought up in the book. Jane battles with creating balanced relationships. Many of the relationships she has are with over-dominating individuals that shift the balance of power and love. Jane has relationships that become stressed and some that fail because they do not have the same vision or want the same things. One of the main questions brought up and answered in Jane Eyre is “should you sacrifice yourself for love?”. Brontë’s answer to this is that it is entirely situation based. Jane does not sacrifice her morals and marry Rochester while he is married to his deranged wife, but then later in a different situation with the wife is dead, she does. Jane also decides to sacrifice her desires and marry St. John, but changes her mind when the sacrifice would be leaving Rochester after he’s called to her. Jane does and does not sacrifice for love all depending on the situation.

Many of the social questions that are brought up in Jane Eyre are answered, but it’s emphasized that there isn’t always just one correct answer or any correct answer as well. Everything changes based on the people involved and the details of the situation.

Through out the book Jane has to learn to stay true to herself. When she lets others decide who she is such as a liar or a miserable child, Jane ends up unhappy and is unable to find real love in those relationships. Her quest to find love in the beginning is a desperate attempt.

“Look here; to gain some real affection from you, or Miss Temple, or any other whom I truly love, I would willingly submit to have the bone of my arm broken, or to let a bull toss me, or to stand behind a kicking horse, and let it dash its hoof at my chest—” Jane is willing to go harm herself and become whatever they want her to become in order just to be loved, which should not be the case. Jane has to learn that she needs to find herself and her center. Find something that anchors her before seeking out love. In the end of the book, Jane because she has become an independent woman is able to find herself and is then able to obtain love that does not harm or forces her to change herself. Identity has to come before Love. In this demonstration we demonstrate what happens when people are not anchored to their identity, or when their identity is unstable. When this happens they are not able to obtain the perfect circle. It is only by being anchored in your identity that you obtain a perfect circle.
