A. What makes this space distinct from others?

Since I was walking around St. John's University Queens Campus, some of the norms and rules of this space is that anyone can get on the campus but not everyone can access every building. Without a valid StormCard, you can't access the law building, the dining hall, the fitness center, and other important buildings on campus.

Since this is a private, catholic university, most of the buildings are named after historical religious figures, such as saints. for example: St. John's Hall, St. Vincent, St. Augustine, etc. There's a mass at the church every Wednesday and Sunday and anyone is welcome to join.

As you walk around campus, you can see flyers and signs that encourage/promote social interactions, such as joining clubs, intramural sports, programs, and attending sports games. They also host events to encourage social interactions, like welcome week and holiday events.

B. Who has entry to this space, and who does not? Why might that be? What kind of rights or other kind of markers does one need to gain entry to this space?

Physically, anyone is allowed onto the campus and most people on campus tend to be students, professors, and other people who work at St. John's. From interacting with other people, St. John's seems to be a school with mostly commuters. Students and people who work here might feel the most welcome on campus compared to other people around campus. But, resident students might feel more welcome than commuter students since this is where they live and they spend more time on campus than commuters.

I don't feel that there really are power dynamics on campus but the people that hold the most authority in my opinion is public safety. They demonstrate that authority by driving around campus in their cars and parking around campus to show that they are there.

Since St. John's is a university, in order to gain access to some of the buildings, you have to be a student with a StormCard. In order to have a Stormcard, you need to be paying tuition. And, in order to live on campus, you have to pay room and board. Some students also have a meal plan in order to gain access to the dining hall. If you're not a student who has a meal plan, you have to pay out of pocket to gain access to the dining hall or marketplace. I think it's about $15 to get into the dining hall without the meal plan.

St. John's is a really diverse and inclusive school for the most part. They have a catholic scholars program for catholic students since this is a catholic university. They also have prayer rooms in some buildings such as Marillac and the residence halls. They make it known that they allow and support all religions and cultures. They have automatic doors, elevators, and ramps all around campus for people with disabilities and handicaps and they always work and are accessible.

I feel like having public safety and surveillance cameras around campus are signs of social control. It keeps people from doing things they aren't supposed to be doing and being in places they aren't supposed to be in.

St. John's is a fairly clean and well-put space and I feel that reflects the value of the people because it shows that everyone is respectful of the spaces they're in and they respect others around them. Also, the campus itself is becoming more modern and they did a lot of renovations and that kind of shows how the campus is becoming more modern as time goes on and staying up to date with the people and students coming in.

C. What do you know about this space? Where does that information come from? What you may not know, and how might you find out more?

I am a resident student at St. John's so my entry to this space is much easier than it is for other people. My father also went to this school and he told me a lot about his experience here so I was influenced to come here based on what I heard about it. Also, the fact that I live here makes my experience much different from other students who don't live here. It wasn't my first choice so that also influences my feelings and experience here.

My assumptions about the people that I see here is that they are only here because it's close to home and they wanted to go to a school that isn't too far away. I always assume that people I see are commuters before I assume they're resident students because this school's tuition is extremely expensive without room and board costs. When I think about people who aren't here, I assume that they didn't choose this school because of how expensive it is.

If I really wanted to know more about the school and campus, I could ask people around campus about their experience here and what things they're involved in to find out what there is to get involved in, I could look on the school website to find out more about it, and I could also ask staff about their experiences as well. I could also just people-watch to see how people interact with the space and each other.

Local businesses around St. John's really support the sports teams here so almost all of the local businesses have flyers of the sports teams' schedules to get people to go to the games and support them as well. This doesn't really have to do with information but some of the local businesses also give discounts to St. John's students.

Final Reflection

I feel like "walking research" can enhance your understanding and awareness of the spaces, bodies, and lives we inhabit. I think so because observing can teach you so much. You can really learn a lot by just watching and observing. You can actually see how people interact with each other and their surroundings without them knowing they're being watched which makes it more authentic and real. By observing, you can see the differences in the space as time goes on and depending on certain factors like environment, climate, time, date, etc. Walking around in a space and being present can also teach you how you personally interact with others and your surroundings which is also interesting because if you don't focus on it then you might not know how you do. You can also focus on how different places make you feel compared to other places and how different people are and how different they interact with certain places and surroundings compared to others.

Post-Walk Uptake

After completing my walk, I realized that most people on campus are really reserved and anti-social. Most people are walking alone with headphones on or on their phones. This makes me wonder what their experiences here are like and how they feel about being here. Something else that I'm curious about on campus is; if this school is mostly a commuter school, is that why people don't talk to each other as often? Another thing that I noticed as I was walking around was that depending on the weather and the day it is, it influences the amount of people outside. I was walking around on a Saturday and noticed that not many people were out on campus because most people are commuters so they have no reason to be on campus and even resident students just stay inside of the dorms during the weekend. But on a nice day, when classes are going on, more people are outside and walking around. But, on a rainy, gloomy Monday, not as many people are out and going to class. Walking around campus and realizing these things made me want to walk around other campuses to compare it to this one and other places. Walking and observing made me realize things I've never seen or overlooked, like how most people don't really talk to one another and everyone stays to themselves. They go to class and go home or back to their dorms. There are a select few people who do interact with others and sit and talk but most of the people here are very introverted it seems. It also made me realize why so many flyers were up and why people make such an effort to get people involved in social activities and promote/encourage social interactions. I used pictures to capture the nuances of my walk because I feel that it was the most appropriate. After all, the campus is fairly quiet so there isn't much to record. Especially right now because not much is going on around campus due to the weather and season.
