Had that been Mignolet in min 88, we would have dropped points. Mourinho is right. We are buying our way to the title, with the right players! Well done lads.

Allison, please remember this is not SerieA, things are a lot faster here. Nearly caught out.

2nd half was woeful. Had it been a stronger team, we will have been in problem. Substitutions done early, which is good, but very negative play by the subs, especially Hendo who is always passing backwards. I would have thought Shaqiri would be a better option unlocking tight defense with his long range.

Anyway, 1-0 and 3 points in the bag. This is all that matters today with City dropping points. Still a lot to do with the 2-tier players coming on for substitutions.

MOTM for me, close call between Milly or Allison. I would go for the vice Captain. Just look at his work rate, keep pushing forward, switching right to left midfield when Keita left and breaking up play.

YNWA

I think if Simon Mignolet wants to go, its good to release this mediocre goalkeeper. No point having a disgruntled no.2, take up international player slots allowed by UEFA and also to deny the talents coming up from the academy. Whatever it is, Klopp should know best if having this Belgian is for the overall good of LFC .

Herr Klopp, don't underestimate the talents of Kelleher & Grabara. Hungry talents are willing to wait in the wings of Allison and learn.

Bright start in the first half, and things went downhill in the second. The lads were playing without a purpose in the second half, holding on to the two nil lead.

Things then exacerbated when Alisson made the howler. He was warned about dribbling and now he knows first hand the speed of the premier league. He is lucky in this case Vardy is not playing due to suspension. The other lads in Leicester gave a good account of themselves, taking the fight to the league leader. This could be a preview of things to come in the Champions' League with everyone now gunning for Liverpool's scalp, considered the free scoring English giant that every team wants to take down. Alisson better learn quick that things can turn around very fast both in the English league and the champions league.

The entrance of Keita was a good play by Klopp. He seems to have an excellent understanding with Milner, who stays back whenever Keita is raiding forward. With Milner in the centre, opponents are forced to play wide, right into the energetic Alexander-Arnold and the ever reliable Robertson. Able cover by Gomez and Van Dijk makes all the difference. Klopp needs to look into whoever can stand in for the irreplaceable Van Dijk if ever he is injured or suspended. As the clock was ticking down in this game, we can see more and more of his leadership quality at the back and pushing the lads to maintain their composure and stand firm.

Gomez deserved to be mentioned too. Switching effortless from central to right. I think he should be given play time more often. He can only excel with each game time under his belt. Lovren and Matip should really worry if they are ever getting play time with Gomez ably assisting Van Dijk in the heart of defence.

First goal for Firmino. As it should be. To me, he is still not as sharp but still, early days/season. Hope Bobby puts of into strengthening his shootings.

Mane, well, he is currently on a higher plateau on his own. Good especially when the others, especially Salah misfiring lately. Mane is enjoying a new lease of life running in from left to centre, making the creative role his and his alone. Long may this continue.

No MOTM for me if the 2nd half is anything to go by. Van Dijk will be the closest.

2-1 away from home. Still commendable lads. But do not take things for granted anymore. Must always play with getting more goals in mind.

YNWA

We are facing Spurs next. Another speedy merchant to contend with.
As Milner said, sometimes we have to play ugly. This would be the key to getting all 3 points from Spurs. They are masters of diving and will play to the sympathy of the refereeing officials.

First up, we have to play less passing around the central of the field. High pressing is crucial, as with Spurs, direct attacking game whilst pinning them down on their own half is the way to go. Counter attacks will be an obvious threat, with Pochettino will try to employ with great effect. The midfielders chosen must be those quick to break up their quick passings once they break. Alisson can redeem himself, playing the last man with our wingbacks all pushing up to finish the game quickly.

Secondly, for the defensive midfielder, back passing must be kept to minimal until a sizable lead is obtained. Then frustrate their players with longer balls back.

Would like to see a 4-1-4-1 line up. Keita & Milner should join Mane and Salah on the prowl and higher up pressing. Firmino will spearhead. Fabinho/Wijnaldum can take the DM position.

So, basically, break their play, get the goals and slow the game down. Our forwards can finish up the jobs getting the decisive goals.

Prediction : 2-0 for our lads. Alisson will redeem himself in this game!

YNWA

Straightforward, he is no Steven Gerrard.

Sir Kenny signed him being an attacking midfielder to support Suarez and Carroll. Fair game. But he is wasted space as DM. I dunno what led Klopp to renew his contact, when you need to play him being Captain and also at his current pay rate of £100k weekly. Maybe Klopp thinks he is entering into his prime being just 28 years of age, and good DM are hard to come by, but to me he's not good enough for the current squad that we have.

I say he should take stock and have a good look at himself. I would really suggest that he voluntarily give up the armband and allow others more capable to take on the role and lead Liverpool to higher honors

No disrespect and no matter what, the cries of YNWA will always ring true for the whole squad.

YNWA

Let's be frank, a lot of tweakings are going to happen. Klopp must be certain who are in his strongest squad. Definitely it will be as follows on current form:

Alisson
TAA Gomez VVD Robbo
Milner Wijn/Fabinho Keita
Salah/Shaqiri Firmino Mane

Any injuries and tweaks must come against, with all due respect, opponents such as Southampton, Spurs and Napoli. We even have a good record against City. For the EFL cup against Chelsea, only then can we afford to put players like Hendo, Sturridge and Lallana.

Klopp must make up his mind early about his strongest team firstly. Then only can he consider which game he can afford to play to a draw. Make no mistake, we may drop points against strong teams, so each game must be chosen carefully to tweak when the games/ties are not to our advantage. Why is Mourinho so successful? Simple! He sizes up his opponents and even though he draws or loses against strong teams, he ensures his mediocre team extracts maximum points from lesser opponents.

We cannot play supreme in one game and loses the other one due to over confidence. That was the primary reason why we dropped points year after year. The rot stops here if clever tweakings are applied. Don't just rotate for the sake of rotating or appeasing the bench!

Below are one of the best ever assembled and Paisley and Fagan utilizes them until a drop of form or lethargy is detected in their games. All other players in the bench must work double hard to dislodge them from the starting line up! And that's they way it should be! Take a leaf from the best managers Liverpool ever had!

Till then, YNWA

Vs Spurs 15th September 2018

This was going to be a hard fought match from the first whistle as Spurs were trying to bounce back after the defeat to Watford before the international break. But the lads did tough it out and came out a deserving 2-1 victor for creating and putting away more chances.

The midfield engine room deserved a special mention. They fought for every ball and close down the speedy opponent quickly. Milner and Keita seems to have a good understanding and with Wijnaldum in fine form, they basically carried the misfiring front three. Although Firmino and Salah did come down to defend, which was good, they are not doing their job. Klopp will need concentrate on this aspect with the right strategy with the play style of the coming opponents in mind. Firmino did score, so that's good for him to put his name on the scoresheet.

The substitution was, with the excepting of Sturridge, was left a lot to be desired. I certainly would have thought Shaqiri would be a better option with his experience in bringing the ball forward and certainly time wastage. He was not given the chance. But Klopp opted to have the negative Henderson (mentioned this too many times, always have ball passed back) and also to replace AAT with Matip when the defence were doing well. That resulted Spurs goal in my opinion. Simply put, never change a winning combination Herr Klopp.

Van Dijk is solid as ever, clearing the high balls with his headers. But MOTM is definitely Gomez. Except for one rash mistimed and missed challenge that nearly resulted in Spurs goal, he was rock solid. He should start every game with Lovren and Matip having to earn their place to dislodge this mega talent. His tackles are some the best never seen before since the days of the great Mark Lawrenson.

Trooping out with 2-1, still a good result after the break and coming out from Wembley. More work to be done with Chelsea now surpassed us on goal difference. Season defining moment at hand and Klopp would have to be careful with his hard metal only one way hoping-for-the-best method. Play to our strength on the bench!

YNWA

The Parisian play a slow dictating game. Their strength is exploiting empty space. In my opinion, despite all the big talk by Neymar and Mbappe, they will come to Anfield and play for a draw.

For this game, speed is crucial. With the front three (and maybe Shaqiri), we have the ammunition to blow them away. The misfiring front three needs to clique and I think the atmosphere at Anfield could provide the crucial moment.

The key person is Firmino. If he plays, he can dictate the front as PSG is never lightning fast like Dortmund or Spurs. The prediction is Bobby will shine and will assist Mane and Salah to get the goals.

The midfield quandrum remains. Who do you play? My selection would definitely be Wijnaldum, Milner and Keita. Fabinho could take play minutes later with Gini rested. He been going 5 games and international game without a break. Fabinho with his experience against French teams could be an asset. This a better place to start him, now more than ever.

The back four is truly a tested lot. No point tinkling it because the common understanding amongst themselves is really good at the moment. Unless they cannot cope with the wizardry of Neymar, then a 3-5-2 formation could be employed. Personally, I think Gomez is in fine form and could take on Neymar. The Kopites will make sure that!

YNWA

pic by besthqwallpapers.com

It just had to be Bobby Firmino whom we predicted to assist but he turned out to be the match winner. Kudos Bobby!

Its good to see Sturridge amongst the scorer too although its obvious he is not match fit. But his poaching instinct is still intact and he could be a valuable member in the Champions' League in the long run. Give him more minutes Herr Klopp.

Mane looks jaded. He should be rested. He was marked out of the game whenever he got the ball. There would be two or three PSG players going for his legs whenever he got the ball. They indeed knew who the dangerman was without Firmino in the play.

Salah was totally out of the game. Bad passes and even bad positioning. He is trying too hard to emulate his feat from last season. He should take it easier and slow it down a bit. Was rightfully substituted by Shaqiri who lit up the remaining of the game with his hard running and gung-ho attitude.

Henderson made excellent tackles today. He was everywhere and it is good to see him getting in there and playing positively too finally. If Hendo can improve on sliding tackles, then I can agree for Klopp to give him the contract. There is not one sliding tackle from him and this is a must for a defensive midfielder. This would improve his overall repertoire.

Whenever Milner fall from a tackle and marking, it always worries me. He is always at a position that if he loses the tackles, he leaves an empty gap in front for forwards to exploit. Millie must calculate his chances and not to go into tackles that he may not recover in time.

MOTM for me is definitely Trent Alexander-Arnold. He was everywhere and winning balls. Neymar was not even a presence until the late charge to their second goal, of course after a wrong tackle by Milner. Faultless display from the young right back and he should have capped his fine game tonight with a goal from the freekick.

3-2, now that's a good comeback and excellent form to maintain!

YNWA

Pic from www.premierleague.com

Vs Southampton 22nd September 2018

This is a game which I had predicted a close 2-1 to Liverpool's favor due to the rearrangement, especially the front three, from Klopp. And I am happy to admit I am wrong.

Things started out pretty well, with an exception around minutes 31-38 whereby I thought midfielders are starting to lose their grip in the centre. They quickly recovered and from then on, cruised to a 3-0 lead at halftime. Klopp was right to shore it up in the 2nd half with the introduction of Milner and also Keita later.

Initially I thought why would Klopp want to replace the lifewire in the centre which is Shaqiri. Shaqiri deserved, at the very least, to be substituted in the 60th - 70th minute at least to savor a standing ovation for his contribution in this game. From the grapevine, he took a slight knock before the interval. He was indeed the only potent attacking force from midfield in the first half. Good to hear Klopp admit he regretted choosing to use Shaqiri "too late" knowing the German's fondness of bedding or easing in players to the English games. Shaqiri has enough experience in the premier league during his time with Stoke City. He deserves more game time.

More and more you can see the understanding of Milner and Keita in midfield. Their understanding to each other's game in the short space of time is very good indeed. When Keita drives forward, Milner will be at the 80 yard to provide cover and vice versa. A symbiotic relationship that could be the key to getting us silverware this season. Reminds me of Greame Souness and Ray Kennedy movements when driving forward.

Mo Salah now. Well, when you are in a slump, you just play smarter (in passings, positionings and movements) and a more relaxed manner. That's one way to overcome it faster. This season is definitely going to be tough for him to emulate last season's feat as well as defenders wising up to his game style now. But he did good by being relaxed and smiling in the first half. If he continues like this, the goals will eventually come back. Klopp played an interesting formation here with Firmino dropped back to behind Salah cum occupying a left forward role position. Klopp's idea is probably getting Salah out of his rut by getting his much needed goal tonic. This formation also allows Mane a more positive right role and Shaqiri a free role from right to middle. The idea is good, but Salah needs to improve on quicker passes and more positioning. I think he should put his mind to assist first than score. His speed and natural poaching will eventually shine through with goals in the later games once Firmino and Mane peak; pulling away defenders thereby leaving Salah with more space to operate his favored left foot. I thought the fourth goal was legitimate but unfortunately ruled off side. That would have capped a good outing for Mo. It is mostly positive here against Southampton. Against Chelsea next, this would be interesting how Salah is played.

Wijnaldum and Van Dijk got their breaks through timely substitutions. A bit worried for them since the last game against PSG in CL. By some unfortunate choice, Van Dijk was a forced substitution but I say it was about time. His knock on the ribs ensured that. Good to know nothing serious. No one player could go for 6-7 full games without suffering fatigue and serious body knocks in the long run.

Matip and Gomez got play time. Good indeed. We need cover for Van Dijk with more big games to come.
EFL Cup tie vs Chelsea

Alright, we are knocked out of the cup by a hungrier Chelsea team and a brilliant solo effort by Hazard. End of. Chelsea came to play and they fought for every ball at the halfway line. Sarri's substitutions basically was a full strength Chelsea squad against an obvious weaker Liverpool team. Stats will tell us the true story of Chelsea's 54% possession and superior pass rate of 545 (86% accuracy) to Liverpool's 465 (82%).

Again, after the goal by Sturridge, the players went to a static mode. They were passing the ball mostly just to keep possession and when they lost the ball, this is where Chelsea pounced. We even had a few close misses not really agonized over.

To me, the lads were just playing as a second-string team mentality. After the substitution of Milner, there were no coherency in the middle of the field. Keita played on his own. Henderson and Fabinho were clueless who is defending, who is going forward and who is chasing the opponent.

Moreno had a poor game and a torrid time at leftback. He doesn't cover space well and gave away fouls. His pace was off and also he was set up against the faster Moses and quick thinking Hazard on the left. There was no cover by Lovren for the poor chap from my observation. Leadership quality is definitely lacking at the back with these four. This is where Van Dijk is the ideal CB to protect the overwhelmed Moreno. With Van Dijk and Gomez not playing, we were left with a porous back as in the yesteryears. Indeed, Lovren and Matip are not the ideal partnership in CB. Clyne just came back, so I think his game was acceptable.

In this game, no no one player stood out! But no blame on the players because tactically, the squad was arranged rather poorly. We lost, but it would be a blessing in disguised. First, it would take away a rather high expectation from the fans. Secondly, Klopp will need to know too many changes only weakens the entire squad. There were no regular first team defenders at all that won 7 games in the trot with a disgruntled Mignolet thrown in as well. And Klopp stuck to that til the end! What would you expect then against an almost full strength Chelsea squad? The inclusion of Firmino and Salah i thought was a tad too late and even that, there is no proper structure that the front is known for. Where do you play Sturridge and Firmino when they are both on the field? I too would have put my best team out and go for the win like Sarri when I see such a disarrayed Liverpool. Advance then, Chelsea will!

Sarri in 1-up now against Klopp. Klopp is now furious, but all in his own doing by doing what modern British managers do best: needless overhauling in the name of resting the players or appeasing the bench! Simple mixture of senior and bench players tweaks would be just fine as said before. Always play your finest or as Sir Bob Paisley said, the Kop looks for honesty and 100% determination from players! For the most part in the second half I saw none of it!

Our first team will be back this Saturday no doubt. Against our second team, Chelsea could only come away with a 2-1 victory. Let's see how they fare when the full might of Liverpool is expected to play this Saturday.

YNWA

pix from www.standard.co.uk

Vs Chelsea 30th September 2018

A very even game with both team have the chance to win it but for a rueful of missed chances as well as brilliant saves from the top two most expensive keepers in the world. Of course, Sturridge's wonder goal (and definitely goal of the week) seal up the game for a fitting 1-1 draw from both sides, which was fair game.

Klopp probably anticipated a furious pace by Chelsea at home and they did for a sustained period in the first half. Robertson, Van Dijk, Gomez and Alexander-Arnold definitely worked overtime. Chelsea led with another good goal from Hazard due to the hard running and good anticipation of cutting of the passes of Liverpool. For Liverpool, perhaps its me only, but I note an overall change in a more positive note with the removal of Henderson and the introduction of Keita in the second half. I have been bashing Henderson due to his negative play, but in this case he did reasonably good although not outstanding. Formation-wise I believe Klopp realised the defensive trio holding the midfield is not working, hence the introduction of Keita. His wingbacks forward forays were not working without open play from the trio running to support. With Keita, he sparked life into the midfield engine with his drives forward and darting runs. With Milner and Wijnaldum knowing where they play after that, its no wonder the second half was basically dominated by the Reds. Simply put, I like to see Keita start more instead of Henderson due to his more positive attacking contributions.

Salah definitely is trying hard to cope with his goal drought at the moment. He is frustrating himself leading to poor play. Even a sitter, which he normally converts, is missed. Klopp was right to sub him due to his ineffective play. He can redeem himself next week against City, who dislikes his pace.

Mane is ok, but jaded. His tired game is showing. Although i like his professionalism, I suspect he has a nasty side and draws ugly fouls against opponents if he is not 100%. Likewise Firmino is also literally a spectator in Chelsea's defensive formation and pace. They are reading the front three like a book currently.

Shaqiri was a good subtitute for Salah, bringing in for more urgency. Good running, but his goal conversion rate needs to improve after this. Missed a sitter with open goal at his beckoning. Nonetheless, I see it positive because the first half was only Milner pushing forward. With Shaqiri coming in, you can see TAA moving forward more. Shaqiri was definitely pulling away defenders at the right for the right wing to operate.

Sturridge is the renaissance man at the moment. When you least expect him to contribute, here he comes with a wonder goal of the week. It just shows he is not a finished item yet and if Klopp can tweak a formation well with Firmino and Mane assisting Stur, the goals will come for the England man. His goal instinct to me is still second to none when it comes in front of the opposition goal. Kepa will attest to that.

1-1 and advantage to City now. We will meet them next week and a good chance we can take all three points. Firstly, we are playing in our fortress. Second, City has a cup tie with giant killers Darby County Wednesday and thirdly, Klopp's record against Guardiola is excellent. We should not lose sight that we remain unbeaten, and we can hand City their first defeat and regain the lead in the Premiership.

Lastly, MOTM, close call and for me its between Sturridge and Allison. My vote is for Allison. Two vital saves kept us in the game until the wondergoal by Sturridge at the last minute of normal time! Sturridge did not have enough game time to take the MOTM although it must be said he allowed the Kop and worldwide fans to heave a sigh of relief in the 89th minute.

What a game and both side came to play attacking football from the first whistle. Well done!

YNWA

Pix from irishtimes.com

Upcoming match vs Manchester City

From video observations, City's play seems to be heavily dependent on its wingers (Sane, Sterling and Mahrez now) streaking along the width of the field and ALWAYS a smart pullback to David Silva, Kelvin De Bruyne (currently out with torn ligament) or Ilkay Gundogan. David Silva steps up by playing a free role. He is at his most dangerous if he plays right in front of the defence. I must say, Ilkay seems to have filled that role perfectly too as Silva is being transitioned out slowly by Pep Guardiola.

So the formation Pep may consider looks like a 3-1-4-2 or a 4-1-4-1 (basically a 4-5-1 with Kun Aguero last man forward) if extra width needed depending of the zonal marking that the opponent employs. With these three in between the opponent's midfielders and defenders, and with their able passing always searches out for Sergio Aguero or Gabriel Jesus and/or one of the wingers to finish off the movement with a goal. This rapid attacking gives the notion that the attack comes in waves when in fact it is clever positioning. With the talent that City possesses so far, Pep's favorite single defensive midfielder (Fernandinho, Bernardo or Mendy) rarely have to do anything but to mop up the loose balls if the front three or four loses it and they win it back immediately. It is little wonder that their goal scoring rate looks tremendous. Pep seems to have perfected these attacking "waves" with his eyes for talent.

Klopp's strategy against City has worked so far because the current wing backs that we have are able to close down the wingers fast. On top of that, whenever Liverpool plays, the attacking three of Mane, Salah and the ever dependable Firmino comes down to the middle and closes the space to the attacking midfielders.

The upcoming game next week will test the mettle of the Liverpool midfielders again. If they are playing against the 3-1-4-2 formation of City, the suggestion is to lock down the number 10 player, usually Silva by not allowing a pullback or space to pass.

If 4-1-4-1 is employed, the right thing to do for me is to have our wing backs push up further upfield to relief pressure in the middle on our trusted 4-3-3 positioning. Whoever holding midfielder of that day is, be it Henderson and Wijnaldum, will have to keep his eye on the pullback. Likewise, the centreback which should be Gomez has to keep watching the line when a DM fails to provide cover. 4-1-4-1 of the opponent is suited for box-to-box and hard runners, a position Milner , Keita and even Shaqiri will flourish. Expect them to be fouled again and again whenever they break up play.

Stay the game with short passes to our front three. Our pace will be more than enough to trouble their defenders. Now, if only any one of our front three finds the form of his life like Sturridge did with Chelsea.

Visiting Anfield and coming from a long week of a cup tie, we have reasons to be optimistic we can scrap out a win. We will need our 12th man again in the Kop. Prediction 2-1 with Mane amongst the scorer.

YNWA

Pix by skysports.com of the City team that dismantled Liverpool last season.

Versus Napoli in Champions' League 3rd October 2018

It was a poor game from the beginning to the end. With the substitution of Keita halfway in the first half, all our attacking option barring Milner were exhausted. Our wingbacks were crimped to our halfway line. Basically it's an embarrassment for our first team against a determined Napoli to say the least.

Ancelotti's squad knew they were in a dogfight, and they came prepared with that in mind. They hassle for every ball and basically left our misfiring front three without any support from our midfielders especially after the removal of Keita. From there onwards, Milner was but a paltry shadow trying to support a failing forward line.

Wijnaldum was both directionless and overwhelmed and not able to play his usual style. Some good run, but no box to box magic from him nor threatened to break through the defence. I thought he would be more adventurous but he was more inclined to help Henderson to break up play.

Klopp's substitutions, barring the last minute Sturridge entry, was really just to salvage a point. I thought it was a mistake but of course, it's easier to judge from hindsight then then the actual game was on. Henderson and Fabinho came in for Keita and Milner respectively and that alone should tell you where the attack is going for Liverpool. No surprise, we did not even have one shot on target. Makes you wonder what is the point putting Sturridge in when there are already no support. Klopp is probably just throwing caution to the wind.

Here is a thought, why don't we play those who are currently on fire, like Sturridge and Shaqiri and not get into a habit of choosing players according to the pay scale or seniority? Are we playing our best at the moment? Do we dare to drop fan favorite Salah when he is not performing? Or remove the likes of Firmino or Mane or God forbid Henderson? Food for thought?

All said, we played subpar and the result was right, much to many fans' disappointment.

A trying month in September carried into October and will culminate with a visit from reigning champions City. The lads need to redeem themselves after such an unprofessional show. Let's defeat the Citizen and put ourselves on course again in pole position for no 19th and also to stake a claim for 6th respectively in our European quest. This is the strongest assembled Liverpool squad yet! Time to believe in yourselves lads! Immortality is waiting.

YNWA

pix from 90min.com

Honestly, we saw a tired Liverpool. A Liverpool that is all out of ideas and not cohesive in their gameplay. I believe Milner's forced exit somehow resonated with the rest of the lads, after such a hectic 7 games schedule. Keita's back, Van Dijk's ribs, and now even Captain Energy hamstrings are all clear telltale signs that the lads are feeling the strain.

Suddenly, our midfield looks vulnerable and being exploited easily by our opponents. Fabinho needs to be ready and should grab the opportunity presenting itself for him. Keita and Wijnaldum will need to step up their current level and also against fatigue.

City piled up the pressure when seeing Liverpool in such a disarray. City should have won the game, but with a stroke of luck, Mahrez skied his shot from the penalty spot. Looks like Anfield is still not yielding to Citizens. May Anfield build itself now as a bonafide fortress against all of Europe now, much less English teams.

A 0-0 draw is good considering the overall quality from the lads. Wijnaldum was full of mistakes and giving the ball easily. He should have been substituted with Shaqiri in my opinion.

Henderson was commanding as the game progressed. More positives when he is starting to pump the ball forward, especially after the forced substitution of Milner. The second half saw Hendo scored very high points with timely tackles, good interceptions and more balls forward.

Despite the troubled run, this game saw a brilliant game by Lovren. He was towering above the rest with his good tackles and anticipation. Except for one questionable tackle against Aguero, I thought he was simply a class on his own in this game. He can flourish if this is the attitude and play he is employing now. He and the able Gomez will see the defence rock steady together with VVD.

MOTM then is Lovren for me. Many a times you get nervous with his clumsiness, but as said, he was simply brilliant tonight, and not just against any teams, but the English champions. International break is coming, so a good time to regroup and restore themselves.

YNWA

Pic from express.co.uk

Vs Huddersfield 21st October 2018

It was a poor game from Liverpool who is expected to dominate from beginning to end, but instead Huddersfield took the fight to our lads.

After from the international break, one can expect the lads to be out of sorts, and indeed that proved to be true. KIopp himself even admitted it. But with City having even more players on international duties, it will seem that their thrashing of Burnley 5-0 only showed their resolve and title credentials. If it comes to goal differences in the end, Klopp will still be looking at his trophy drought to continue. A sensible buy of a good striker and more importantly an attacking midfielder in the January transfer window will be top priority now.

Salah scored the all important winner, but that was before Huddersfield gave us a scare or two. One attempt hit the goal post, two hand balls inside the box as well as numerous Huddersfield raids into the 18 yard box showed how weak the midfield was in protecting the box. As for Salah, I believe he is starting to get into his gear and was looking his usual menacing self, missing for the last few matches. This only show that his mental strength is coming back after suffering the trauma of a shoulder dislocation and only a short break after the Premier league season due to the World cup. It happens to the best as most will be afraid to aggravate it further. Think Gerrard after his 7 month layoff with hamstring injury. Psychologically, Salah is getting back to his best. The goals will flow soon enough. He needs to continue to think his role as a provider first instead of pressuring himself to repeat his last season wonder.

Two changes, which I thought finally Klopp was brave enough to make when he saw weaknesses is by removing the ineffective Henderson and Milner with Wijnaldum and Fabinho. Henderson and Milner were seriously letting Huddersfield to overrun the middle and pushing balls forward. A box-to-box midfielder was needed and one who would compliment Shaqiri's free role in attack, and that's what Wijnaldum brought into the game. The second half had Wijnaldum and Shaqiri dictating the attacks from the middle of the field. With the introduction of Fabinho, his timely tackles and positional sense was more than adequate to cover our back four. Despite still not up there yet with his pace, you can see that Fabinho will be a dominating holding midfielder in time to come. Midfield was rock solid with both of them although Firmino's introduction was a bit lost by him not replacing Sturridge and in that position he was given, he made a few unforced errors losing balls to simple challenges. Salah went to the left, Shaqiri and Firmino behind the attacks and Sturridge lost inside the 18 yards only tells us the story why we had only 1 goal to show to City's 5. Klopp it seems still haven't figured out the players best side to play.

I also thought Gomez was wasted on the right. He was his usual dependable self but with Shaqiri playing an open role and not taking up the right role per se, the right side of attack was not operational. I would have thought Alexander-Arnold would be more suited for this game. Firmino was not really needed IMO.

Anyway 3 points is 3 points. Good teams slug out results. Huddersfield should consider themselves unlucky by not taking away a point at home from the weak display of Liverpool to be honest.

MOTM : It's a toss between Shaqiri and Salah and It's Salah for me for putting us in the driving seat. A special mention must also be said of Fabinho. He will be a juggernaut in the middle. Putting things in perspective, one-nil win over Huddersfield is not something I would want to shout on top of the roof!

YNWA

pix courtesy of www.thisisanfield.com

The team that was picked by Klopp looks like the team of the future. I would think if he continues with this team, silverwares are sure to come by. This game proved that with this selection, we are superior in all department, barring only our players' own failures, suspension or injury. In my opinion, we can see silverwares within two years, but if the self believe that they have can rise, we can even accomplish it this season itself.

Firstly, its good to see Salah getting on the scoresheet again. His confidence will be high now and if I were Cardiff manager, I better get ready two buses in the next game. Good to see the Egyptian very fast overcoming psychological trepidation after such a serious injury. His goal tally will increase soon enough.

Interesting formation with Shaqiri playing on the right and Firmino just behind the front three. Salah, of course, was spearheading the attack. I think Firmino, given time, will excel and seeing his movements, he will soon be at his best. He is no stranger to this attacking midfielder position seeing he excelled during his time in Hoffenheim. A defender turned striker, and now a (false?) no.10 role, he will be able to adapt well in any position given to him. A goal in this game, certainly will help increase his confidence that he can be free to roam without the baggage of a false (sic) striker needing to score goals in every game.

Shaqiri should relish the attacking role given to him. His place on the right certainly is a stamp of approval by Klopp to get the goals. His deft touches and good positioning is certainly a sight to behold. His time with Stoke City, he was a constant thorn to any Liverpool side he faced before and I actually dread to see our lads go against him previously. Now with him on our side, I reckon only good things to come from this brilliant player.

Fabinho and Wijnaldum really settled the middle and provide cover for our wing backs to run forward. Fabinho can only go from strength to strength and I think the best is yet to come from this naturally gifted Brazillian. Wijnaldum was a lot of confidence playing today. He will be indispensable cog making the transition from defending to attacking. Dutch master? No, not yet, but the potential is there definitely. Only with goals can he lay claim to being one!

Sturridge got game time, and that's good. But it was his assists that were really impressive tonight. He can still contribute to this Liverpool team, if he puts his mind into it! Klopp will need to watch and help his progress closely.

Our defence for this game? I rate the defence 9/10. Just ask Allison! Zvezda's players were left with just three chances for a sniff at goal. Van Dijk and the able Gomez is definitely marshalling the backline and probably key to sustaining our drive for our first silverware!

Ok, coming back to earth, the team from Serbia was not our match. I predicted a 3-0 victory and after the first goal, Liverpool was cruising. 4-0 is flattering but lets hold the celebration first. The first 15 minutes saw the boys trying to get the passing going, but after they controlled the high balls, the next 75 minutes were a shooting practice, to say the least. In my opinion, good win, but nothing much to shout until and unless we top the group. PSG and Napoli just played themselves to a draw and to our advantage.

All the lads did well tonight. As for MOTM, it is a rather close call between Robertson and Shaqiri for me. Robertson gets my nod because of his efforts and deep runs both in attack and defending. The first half definitely was his thunder! Shaqiri should not be discounted because his efforts were the reason the first two goals came. Robertson by a hairline nod through his hard work and giving his all, Ian St John's advice just rings true for me.

Pix courtesy of express.co.uk

Vs. Cardiff City 27th October 2018

Was a good game except for the error by Van Dijk presenting Cardiff a goal and thus unable to maintain a clean sheet tonight.

Overall, after the second goal by Mane, the lads went into cruise mode. It was either a slow game or one of many goals, if the lads manage to click after the thumping of Crvena Zvezda just two days ago. And click they did.

The double-six formation seems to be stabilizing the back, which allowed changes to our back for with the insertion of Lovren and Moreno without any difficulties at all. Cardiff never seems to be able to break down our defence, if we played true to our game. But alas, the defenders will be annoyed with themselves at the back for allowing that simple tap in by Peterson.

Firmino had a quiet game. Had two or three defenders on him at any moment whenever he had the ball. Was rightly substituted by Milner who operated on the left and allowing Mane to go forward thereafter.

Mane had a quiet first half. His first goal was a gift by some sloppy defending by the blue bird players. Up til then, even with Salah's goal, they defended well. But quality players always shines through, and in this case, Mane was no exception. As if to put all arguments to rest, his second goal was brilliant and worthy of his talented ability. Maradona would be proud, as was his response in 1986.

Shaqiri's inclusion was good. A hesitant Lallana was slowing down the flow right in front of the opponent's goal. Klopp had only Lallana as the creative midfielder and very much depended on the wingbacks to run the flanks. Lallana had a chance at the end of half time, but other than that, he will still need adjustment after such a long lay off. Its still not coming along for him as of this point in time. Shaqiri did inject some pace at the centre with the defenders pulled to the centre leaving Alexander-Arnold and Salah plenty of space on the right. For me, Shaqiri is paying back his transfer price in spades. Will be watching out for more wizardry from the Swiss international. Rightly deserved the third goal, such was his talent, coming from the centre.

Stern test next week against a seemingly resurgent Arsenal. Time to test our mettle again against the best the league has to offer. Looks like Klopp has planned that ahead with some of the lads rested today. Robertson and Gomez should welcome that break. Van Dijk should have one too right after the Arsenal game. Arsenal plays a fast game, and geggenpressing will need to be deployed in a 4-3-3 formation.

MOTM : I think Shaqiri takes it over Salah and Mane, even only playing in the second half starting from 60th minute. He did enough to convince the players and supporters that there are still plenty of goals with his inclusion. And what a goal he scored!

We are top of the league currently and scored a lot of goals to try close the gap against City's goal difference. That's all that matters for now. Job well done, lads!

YNWA

Pix by 90min.com

We have made ourselves a disfavor but getting beat in Serbia. Had we won, we would be in prime position to qualify after the draw between Napoli and PSG. As such we need a win and a draw against our next two opponents to ensure qualification to the next round.

I have made a call before that we need to look into an attacking midfielder and maybe a striker in the coming transfer window. This is the argument:

An attacking midfielder is crucial now with Oxlade-Chamberlain and now Keita sidelined. Where are our box-to-box players? The observation is this: we do not have attacking support to our front three and this is where our forwards falter. We have a void here for a midfielder to carry it forward to our front three! Klopp is pushing Firmino behind Salah and this has caused such a disjointedness. If ever we need a creative force from our attackers, it should be Mane and not Firmino. Leaving it to Lallana alone, he is not capable to carry the match by himself. We have Shaqiri no doubt, but Klopp from his selection of the Swiss international shows he is not too confident in playing Shaq for now. When your forward engine is faltering, I would have taken Shaq to Belgrade come what may. Klopp could be forgiven to think that Liverpool would win the return match handsomely even without Shaq, but it turns out Wijnaldum is the only box-to-box player that we have and this season he is defensive minded more than anything else. Remember the much touted 4-2-3-1 defensive formation?

Why a striker? Its simple! Take a page from our legendary managers. When we had Toshack and Keegan, Dalglish was recruited. Thereafter came Rush. When we had Rush, Walsh came along. Then we got Aldridge, then Barnes, then Beardsley, Then Owen, Fowler etc. The key here is refresh the strikeforce. Our front three will be easy read for opposing managers and defenders now after their exploits last season. We still have the firepower, but it would not hurt to add another class name amongst our rank. Klopp must seriously look into this!

Ok back to our review then against Red Star. Bottom line is we played bad, that's all there is to it! We will rebound against Fulham of which I have no doubt. Keep your head high boys. All is not lost! we have everything to play for both in the CL and Premiership still. Start Fabinho, and start Shaqiri! 4-1-2-3 could be a very interesting attacking minded formation.

pix from dailymail.co.uk

Vs Watford 25th November 2018

This game was far but concluded as a game won as most of the boys just came back from international duties and Watford had a two week rest as well as home advantage. Thankfully, we did not have any injuries in the build up to the game.

4-2-3-1 seems to be preferred choice of Klopp nowadays. Building on defence whilst entrusting the forwards to get the all important first (and probably winning) goal, Klopp is slowly and surely plugging a leaky defence of yesteryears. The clean sheets are for all to see why we are just behind City by just two points.

Boring first half to be honest! Shaqiri had a night to forget. Against a packed defence, Shaqiri had no answer. His running was off and he lost possession too many times. Substituted by Milner as a result because Shaq was ineffective on the right.

Very glaring now is we need a playmaker or two. A David Silva of sorts. The first half said so. Thankfully we had Firmino deeper behind the front man to do it today. It took a well timed and excellent pass to set Mane off before he assisted Salah to get that all important first goal. Thereafter, as said, Liverpool were cruising as the pressure is off after taking the lead. Two additional goals; a brilliant free kick from the rising Alexander-Arnold and an open header for Firmino seals it. Question remains, can Firmino provide these sort of unlocking passes week in and week out?

The worst player on the pitch today was definitely the captain Henderson. The game was won and a proper captain would take stock and not let his rivalry with the opponent player Isaac Success to get on him. No doubt, he was irritated with the clumsy challenges by Success and other Watford players, but to let himself earn a second yellow for a needless challenge was sheer stupidity. Tactically, the game plan had to change for a defensive cover until the third goal arrived. Two subsequent substitutions required by removing our two front men, was the only choice Klopp had. 4-2-3-1 turned to a 5-3-1 with Wijnaldum, Fabinho and Milner holding middle ground and 3 centrebacks. Henderson really has to go, despite just signing on a new contract.

Whilst there were glimpses of brilliance from Robertson, Mane, Salah, Firmino and Alexander-Arnold, the one constant was Virgil Van Dijk. No doubt then that he is MOTM. So dominating of him at the back, that the Watford players never bothered to hassle him whenever he got the ball. They knew better to get back to defensive formation than to take on our man-mountain. Mark of respect? This respect needs to be felt by the entire squad, by removing Henderson from captaincy and fast forward Van Dijk forward to be Milner's no.2 immediately. No doubt Liverpool captain in the future and also a legend in the making. Klopp needs to consider letting him rest with lesser opponents soon. He is playing week in and week out for far too long.

This win is required to keep pace with City. With City still having to meet a lot of top six clubs, we have every reason to be optimistic of silverwares this season. Do the change Klopp. This season is going to be defined by your choice of players and masterstroke!

YNWA

pix from theanfieldwrap.com

There is this nagging feeling that Bournemouth's stubborn defence will lock Liverpool's game this afternoon to a draw.

The only way to unlock this is if Naby Keita plays his cut and thrust game, not unlike Steven Gerrard did in his Liverpool play days. Firmino and Shaqiri can both act as decoys to pull away defenders to free up Keita and notably Salah.

Keita will therefore go to the left Salah in the centre and Shaqiri on the right. Mane is ruled out by Klopp for this fixture. Lovren and Gomez are also on the crock list. Firmino just behind Salah in the centre and also Wijnaldum to support Keita towards the left interchangeably. Robertson too! We will need our no. 8 to be at his level best to make a run into the centre and employ outside of the 18 yard shooting.

My prediction for the team today is

Alisson
ATT Matip VVD Robertson
Fabinho Wijnaldum
Shaqiri Firmino Keita
Salah

If things click, 2-0 for the Reds. If not, a damaging draw will allow City to still hold the summit despite playing a strong but misfiring Chelsea later. We are of the opinion Chelsea can hold City in Stamford Bridge!

Still a bit irritated by the way we lose the ball in the middle of the park. Shaqiri and Firmino will have to buck up because Napoli will not be a pushover in the centre.

Happy to see Mane rested. He was not even trying towards the last few minutes of the game. He can make the difference in 4 more days.

4-0 and a hattrick for Salah. He himself is unlocking opponents' defenses, but we should not get ahead of ourselves after this match as its only Bournemouth, no disrespect to them. We are seriously in dire need of a playmaker.

This is a time all Liverpool fan live for it! To floor our arch nemesis and to make a serious statement that we are championship contender.

A thrilling game and its all boils down to who wants it the most for this match. The interesting thing is for the first time, you note nobody is playing the role of a point man and everyone is assisting in moving the ball around. This has cause a massive problem for United to contain. From Fabinho to Mane, Wijnaldum to Keita, from Firmino to Robertson, the back, midfield and the front worked as one seamlessly unit.

Did Liverpool deserve the win? Without a shadow of a doubt with the number of shots on goal a telling factor. So a emphatic 3-1 destruction of a makeshift United squad. This was where geggenpressing was at its most impressive with Firmino and Wijnaldum taking the lion share of the credit. They hassle the middle and made life difficult for the opposition.

Everyone in the Liverpool squad is a winner, including Allison Becker. An unforced error not to be able to catch a simple cross by Lukaku resulting in United leveling the score at 1-1. Other goalkeeper may crumble in distraught, but Allison still continued to spray excellent passes to push the boys upwards. With us facing Wolves in the next game, I think no damage will be done to his confidence. He shall redeem himself.

Shaqiri is fast turning to be a supersub! I hope he gets more game time as the season progresses. We need his "impacts" as he puts it in games such as this! He is a clever player and very good in looking for spaces to exploit! A natural poacher!

And oh yes, welcome back Clyney! We need ya more that you know!

From a purist point of view, and not taking away anything from Liverpool, the formation of Mourinho is interesting and somewhat backwards. With a 3-5-2 formation, and with Liverpool on a high and fine form after our victory against Napoli, it looks very likely that he has every intention of exposing Manchester United's defence frailty for Edward Woodward to stomach. Granted that Smalling is mysteriously injured (in a warm up in Anfield), but a 3 man defence is a forlorn quest to contain Liverpool's attack compared to his bus parking heydays. 36 shots on target against United's 6 basically tells you the whole story. Personally, I think Mourinho has lost the plot and by throwing tantrums for not having money to spend, he is on a downward spiral. Pogba, Martial and probably Mata are looking for the exit come January I would expect.!

Who is the MOTM? Everyone was exceptional, but if I have to choose, Mane will be the choice. The scored the first goal and also played the pass for the second one and Liverpool was well on its way. Andy Robertson deserved a special mention, because his tireless running and cutting right into the left side of United with seemingly ease from their 5 man midfield. Fabinho too deserved credit for protecting the back line as well as a moment of magic to conjure a lob for Mane to get our first. Is Mane's prolificity coming back? All Liverpool fans are holding their breath!

Well done! Just very well done lads! YNWA

Pix by Fox Sports Asia

Playing Wolves at home and coming back with 3 points and the lead at the summit of the premier league certainly is no small feat. Wolves in fact are no pushover, after holding City, Man United and Arsenal and defeating Chelsea to put on record. They actually can held their head high for bringing the fight the league leaders. Liverpool however did overcome them and with such composure is certainly fueling hope for no 19 to the Kop hopefuls. Tonight's Liverpool is a side brilliant on all fronts that it's really unfair to single out a MOTM.

Only fair to say Henderson and Fabinho were excellent manning defence in the centre and allowed any one of them to push forward. This certainly resulted in an assist from Fabinho to get first goal. They can start more often and interchange alternately with Wijnaldum to get a breather. Fair play to all three of them to get a piece of the action at Molineux stadium.

Now to do the unenviable. For MOTM, although all played brilliantly, there is one that really playing in near perfection to stand out against the rest. It has to be Virgil Van Dijk. He was leading by example and with his neutralizing Traore, Wolves were simply backpedalling with nearly no options left for attack as seen against their previous Big 6 encounters bar Spurs. Allison and Van Dijk are on top just holding Liverpool's defence and shutting out all comers. Liverpool never looked in danger of conceding to Wolves when it comes to both of them playing the ball.

Merry Christmas lads and stay angry.

YNWA

Pix from liverpoolecho.co.uk

Firstly, this is Liverpool humming now and whipping whichever opponent that is unfortunate enough to stand in its path currently. There is no denying it, even when Arsenal took the lead against the flow of play, after a mistake Lovren, they still come roaring back to a commanding 4-1 lead by halftime. Such is their confidence!

To Liverpool's credit, they pressed high and more so pressing forward relentlessly, they deserved the win. So high was their pressing that Aubameyang had only 13 touches on the ball and most were from kick-offs. Geggenpressing at its best! Firmino finally got into the act after playing assist all season. His hattrick was deserved even as Salah forego a penalty for Bobby to get his hattrick.

If Liverpool is leading by 6 points before the game at the summit of the premier league with the forwards misfiring on most part of the current season, now that they are scoring freely indeed bears down on Guardiola now. Playing City next, this will be a season decider for Klopp and his merry men if they can take down City at Etihad. With Spurs blowing hot and cold for a good part of the last decade and as witnessed in their collapse against Wolves, it certainly safe to say that it looks a good two horse race with City as the closest and only challenger to Liverpool's quest for number 19th. The title is Liverpool's to lose if they can overcome Etihad with them holding a possible 10 points lead by the time Saturday comes over their main title rival.

We are torn who takes the MOTM. We like Wijnaldum's pressing, tackles and forward drive, but we believe when Firmino scored his second goal in a bit of individual brilliance and placing Liverpool firmly in the driving seat, the result is pretty clear. So Bobby takes it, with him now holding the record as the most lethal Brazillian in terms of scoring rate in the Premier League surging ahead of second place Coutinho and third placed Juninho. Not bad for a false number 9 to say the least.

Until the match in Etihad, they deserved today's celebration and the perch of the league table's apex.
