After your map study, create a square on this padlet that specifically answers the following questions:

1) Name the geographic area you focused on (can be either your home state/county, a specific region in Colorado, or the area where you might want to teach after graduation).
2) Based on your research from looking at map in the Washington Post article, “Mapping where English is not the language at home”, list the most prevalent language other than English that is spoken by residents in the county you chose, and the percentage of residents in the county that speak that language.
3) Drawing on information from the North American English Dialects map, describe the variety/dialect of English that is spoken in the area you selected. What variety/dialect of N. American English called? If there are audio samples of the variety/dialect in your chosen area, listen to a few and note what you noticed or heard. 4) Include an image/video that represents the area you explored.

1) I focused on Greensboro, NC (my hometown)
2) The most prevalent language, other than English, that is is spoken is Greensboro is Spanish. Out of the 452,429 people that live here, 11.9% of families speak Spanish at home.
3) The dialect that is spoken in Greensboro is "Classical Southern." One of the big tells of this dialect is "a catch-all for all R-dropping dialects in the South." I listened to an audio sample and you can really hear the deep southern accent.
4) I chose this picture opposed to some of the sky views of the city because I felt that the other pictures made Greensboro feel bigger than it actually is to me. I also live about 20 minutes outside of the city so this isn't really what I picture when I think of Greensboro but this is more what the article focuses on

1.) I grew up in Middlesex County so I focused on that area but also spent some time looking at the Boston area.
2.) The most common languages spoken in the Boston area and Middlesex County are Chinese (18.3%) and Spanish (24.3%) but as you move down the coast towards Plymouth county the most common dialect is Portuguese (20.8%).
3.) The dialect spoken in Boston is "Eastern New England" which includes the classics like "r" dropping being the biggest tell when talking to someone from downtown Boston. Another bring dialect pattern is that "father" does not rhyme with "bother". I listened to the audio clip and was able to pick up on different pronunciations of the word "water".

According to the Washington Post map, the most prevalent language besides English is Spanish with 27.6%. Every bordering county's most prevalent language is also Spanish.
3. It looks like the dialect in this area is the West while its sub dialects are Alaska and Silver City, New Mexico. For example the vowel of "too" is more fronted than the vowel of "toe".
4. I chose a picture of the trail winds soccer park in Thornton because growing up this is where I saw the most diversity in language. I would play teams that spoke different languages, that went to different schools around the area, and where I was exposed to Spanish speaking the most.
