The person who said this is Jonas's assignment folder. It was said to Jonas, and the reason why is that Jonas got the receiver of memories job, which is the highest hour job. What's happening in the story is Jonas was just assigned to his job and was reading it at night. The author is trying to make us see that Jonas is much different than his friends and family. The reason this quote is super important is that it means that people weren't allowed to lie in the community. It pulls from real life because people lie every day.

He had never lied on purpose, but the thought that anyone in his community could be lying, it gave him a start.

The author is trying to make us see that there could be some very shady stuff going on that people in the community could not know about. Or maybe they do know about it but are forbidden to tell, therefore giving the rule, you may lie.

This quote is important because it shows that there is more to the story than what meets the eye. People here could be lying all day everyday, 24/7, and nobody would know the difference. It makes you think how much of everything you hear in real life is a lie or not.

The quote “You may lie” is said by the Chief Elder to Jonas when she gives him his instructions as the new Receiver of Memory. It happens right after the Ceremony of Twelve, when Jonas is learning the special rules that apply only to him, and he is reading the folder that lists what he can and cannot do. The purpose of the quote is to show Jonas that, unlike everyone else in the community, he now has the unusual ability to lie, which is normally forbidden. This moment is shocking because the community values honesty above all, so being allowed to lie shows that Jonas’s new role is different and comes with serious responsibilities. It reveals that the society controls its citizens by limiting knowledge and that Jonas’s life will now be separate from others, highlighting the conflict between individual knowledge and societal rules. The quote is significant because it emphasizes how powerful and isolated Jonas’s position is, and it sets a serious and thought-provoking tone that makes readers question what is right or wrong in controlling information. The author uses the literary device of contrast here, showing the difference between Jonas and the rest of the citizens, to help us see the tension between freedom and control. This story had a significant impact on my thinking about honesty and trust, and it connects to the real world because it makes me consider how people in positions of power sometimes hide the truth or allow deception, which can affect fairness and freedom in society.

It got Jonas thinking about everyone elses rules and how they might be able to lie.

The whole community might be lying. Jonas is just starting to read about his job and the rules about it, everyone else got a book of it but he got one page. And he is going over to the house for his job. This means that other people may have gotten this rule and they could be lying about everything so it also reveals that this perfect world might not be all perfect because of the lies. The tone of it show that it isn’t forcing him to lie but he might need to for this job. This quote is important because it shows all the rules like how people can’t normally lie and how he is kind of being told to lie.

But his folder of rules was thin and had barely had anything in it.

This quote means that Jonas is allowed to lie now, and he wasn't allowed to lie and had to tell the truth before he got the folder of rules for his job. This quote reveals that not everyone in the community is allowed to lie unless told they can. The author is trying to make us see that Jonas, before, was not able to lie and NEEDED to tell the truth, but he is now allowed to lie because of his job. The tone/mood of this quote is very straightforward and telling us that Jonas may lie if he wants to and doesn't need to lie or not/need to tell the truth.

This story/passage had a significant impact on my thinking about how things that are normal in the real world are strange/funny to do or be able to do.

Who may have said this might have been either the past receiver as we learn or it could be the ceremony announcer. This sentence is being said to Jonas, as he is reading the rules of his new assignment. What was happening in the story when it was being said, Jonas was in his “Sleepingroom” and was just opening his folder to see the rules for his new assignment as a twelve and becoming a new role. What the quote could mean is that he may be able to deceive people around him if it comes to that as an option. What it could reveal is that the system can lie to the people, as Jonas’s new assignment seems like it’s as important as the announcers in his town.

The author is trying to make us see that the system or the people of the “honor” that Jonas is now with in his assignment, is able to say deceitful messages or sentences to the people if it ever comes up in Jonas’s or anyone else’s ((even though there is no one else as we have seen)) assignment. It can also shape the tone of how the people will respond to the deceitful messages and how they cooperate even if it may be a lie.

This quote made an impact on my thinking about how the people could be told lies and they would just follow even if it may be false as the people with “honor” are more respected and trustworthy. A real world connection I can make with this quote is with either government power and authority or just high management in general. You may not be aware of the false messages you may be told through the government as you know that you should respect them no matter what or else you could be dealt with punishment.

The quote is telling Jonas that to do this job, he will have to lie because people cannot know what he does. This story had a significant impact on my thinking about whether everyone's assignment says they can lie, then can Jonas trust anyone, even his parents?

The chief said it when he was telling Jonas about the rules of his assignment. The purpose is so people will think he is telling the truth so he could make them hear what they want to hear but maybe he is just. He was just given his assignment and they started telling him the rules for his assignment. The quote means that you are aloud to lie to others. This reveals that he will b the only one to lie to others but he is wondering what if they have lied to me. The author is trying to make us see that with this assignment he gets to lie and do other thing the community can’t do. The quote is important because it is telling us what he can do and what he will be doing while he is doing his assignment. Like when my parents tell me to lie to my sister because I can’t tell her something that is protecting her from hearing something she can’t hear. This got me thinking about if he is the only one aloud to lie how do we know the other people haven’t lied either.

This happens right after the Ceremony of Twelve when he is selected to be the Receiver. This quote means that Jonas cannot trust anyone because he doesn’t know if they were given the same instructions as him. The author is trying to make us see that Jonas is different from everyone else and he can’t do anything about it.This quote is very important because it shows us that Jonas must have big secrets to keep and he will probably start lying to everyone he loves just for his assignment.

The Giver said the quote “You may lie”. The purpose of this quote is to lie to keep things safe. Like how you can’t share dreams at this job because of what might show up in them. The rules that he had to get said this as well.

The quote was said when he was at his new job and he was kind of tripped up by that because he usually wasn’t allowed to lie. He seemed a little shocked by this.

The quote means that if he lies he wont be punished like he usually would. It revels that the character might lie a lot more than he usually would, that can lead to bad habits and other bad things. If he has to lie due to his job that's ok, but as long as his mood doesn’t change.

The tone of voice The Giver said this is a pretty serious tone of voice. His mood was probably worn out and maybe tired as well. The author is trying to make us see that this is an important part.

This quote “You may lie” is important because it is telling a big part into the next few chapters in his life. He might break up some of his relationships and this might have a significant impact on his family. Some connections that we can pull from our lives is all of the lies we do and have said every single day. This story has a big impact on my thinking about what we lie about all the time. We lie everyday and they aren’t even allowed to lie so that is why the story is changing my thinking on what times and when are right to lie.

Jonas is reading his rules for his new job as he was on one of the last rules he saw where it said "you may lie" he didn't know if he or anybody could lie or has lied before. And he could start to lie way more often because he knows that nothing "would" happen to him. And it shows that his job is very important and could be a big role for him in the story.

It was given to Jonas on his paper for his job and every twelve was just assigned their forever job. And the quote "You may lie" means that if something you say isn't true, then you can say it. Lois Lowry is trying to make us see that only the receiver of memory can lie. This quote is important because a lot of people lie in our current society “This passage had an impact of how much we lie in our everyday life.

The rule “You may lie” means Jonas is now allowed to break a rule that everyone else must follow. It shocks him because he was always taught that lying was not allowed. It makes him realize that his new job will be very different and that there maybe secrets he doesn't know about.

The giver said this when he was explaining to Jonas the rules of being a receiver. it is also when Jonas just started to learn how to be one.this means that Jonas is able to lie to his family unit. And reveals that Jonas always wants to follow the rules of the community. The significance of it is that the author is trying to make us see the becoming the receiver changes a lot of things in this community. This quote is important due to it’s significance in the text and what Jonas has to go through.

When Jonas is reading the last rule #8 after reading all the other rules of being a receiver, he looks at the 8th " YOU MAY LIE", and he is stunned. But this shows that since he is a receiver, he gets this privilege for his own good, not getting in trouble, but still having to be responsible and careful of how he uses this rule, meaning that he can't use it obnoxiously or abuse it because he could get in trouble for that

Jonas is reading a set of rules that he's given as the new reciever and the 8th rule is "you may lie." And this is a big deal because nobody else, besides him, in this community is allowed to lie. This shows that since he is the new receiver, he is now allowed to lie, and this will later help him in the future.

Jonas is told this in his rules and training envelope. Jonas has just received his selection of being the next receiver and has gone home to read his rules and find out where his training will be. The quote means that if something were to happen and Jonas wished to lie he may. The author is trying to make us see that lying can be used by Jonas to his advantage. This quote is important because later in the book Jonas needs to lie.
